wa mā lakum lā tu'minūna billāh(i), war-rasūlu yad‘ūkum litu'minū birabbikum wa qad akhaża mīṡāqakum in kuntum mu'minīn(a).

Why do you not believe in God when His Messenger calls you to your Lord, and He has taken your pledge, if you are believers?

9

Why do you not spend in God’s way when the heritage of heavens and earth is His? Those who spent and fought before the conquest are not equal to those who did so after. The former are higher in rank, but God promises good to all. God is Aware of what you do

11

12

yauma taral-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti yas‘ā nūruhum baina aidīhim wa bi'aimānihim busyrākumul-yauma jannātun tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā, żālika huwal-fauzul-‘aẓīm(u).

On the Day you see believing men and women, their light shining before and to their right, they are told, Today, glad tidings of gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where you will abide forever. That is the supreme triumph

13

yauma yaqūlul-munāfiqūna wal-munāfiqātu lil-lażīna āmanunẓurūnā naqtabis min nūrikum, qīlarji‘ū warā'akum faltamisū nūrā(n), faḍuriba bainahum bisūril lahū bāb(un), bāṭinuhū fīhir-raḥmatu wa ẓāhiruhū min qibalihil-‘ażāb(u).

On the Day hypocrites, men and women, say to believers, Wait for us to take your light, they are told, Go back and seek your own light. A wall with a gate is set between them, inside is mercy, outside is torment

14

yunādūnahum alam nakum ma‘akum, qālū balā wa lākinnakum fatantum anfusakum wa tarabbaṣtum wartabtum wa garratkumul-amāniyyu ḥattā jā'a amrullāhi wa garrakum billāhil-garūr(u).

Hypocrites call to believers, Were we not with you? They reply, Yes, but you ruined yourselves, wavered, doubted, and were deceived by false hopes until God’s decree came. The deceiver misled you about God

15

fal-yauma lā yu'khażu minkum fidyatuw wa lā minal-lażīna kafarū, ma'wākumun-nār(u), hiya maulākum, wa bi'sal-maṣīr(u).

Today, no ransom is accepted from you or disbelievers. Your abode is the Fire, your fitting refuge, a wretched destination

16

alam ya'ni lil-lażīna āmanū an takhsya‘a qulūbuhum liżikrillāhi wa mā nazala minal-ḥaqq(i), wa lā yakūnū kal-lażīna ūtul-kitāba min qablu faṭāla ‘alaihimul-amadu faqasat qulūbuhum, wa kaṡīrum minhum fāsiqūn(a).

Is it not time for believers to humble their hearts to God’s remembrance and the revealed truth, unlike those given scripture before, whose hearts hardened over time, many becoming rebellious?

17

i‘lamū annallāha yuḥyil-arḍa ba‘da mautihā, qad bayyannā lakumul-āyāti la‘allakum ta‘qilūn(a).

Know that God revives the earth after its death. We have made Our signs clear to you, so you may understand

18

innal-muṣṣaddiqīna wal-muṣṣaddiqāti wa aqraḍullāha qarḍan ḥasanay yuḍā‘afu lahum wa lahum ajrun karīm(un).

Men and women who give charity and lend God a good loan will have it multiplied, and they will receive a noble reward

19

wal-lażīna āmanū billāhi wa rasūlihī ulā'ika humuṣ-ṣiddīqūn(a), wasy-syuhadā'u ‘inda rabbihim, lahum ajruhum wa nūruhum, wal-lażīna kafarū wa każżabū bi'āyātinā ulā'ika aṣḥābul-jaḥīm(i).

Those who believe in God and His messengers are the truthful and witnesses before their Lord. They will have their reward and light. But disbelievers who deny Our signs are dwellers of the Fire

20

Know that worldly life is but play, amusement, adornment, boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children, like rain whose plants amaze farmers, then wither, turn yellow, and crumble. In the Hereafter is severe punishment, God’s forgiveness, and His pleasure. Worldly life is only fleeting enjoyment

21

sābiqū ilā magfiratim mir rabbikum wa jannatin ‘arḍuhā ka‘arḍis-samā'i wal-arḍ(i), u‘iddat lil-lażīna āmanū billāhi wa rasūlih(ī), żālika faḍlullāhi yu'tīhi may yasyā'(u), wallāhu żul-faḍlil-‘aẓīm(i).

Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a paradise as vast as the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers. That is God’s grace, given to whom He wills. God possesses immense grace

22

mā aṣāba mim muṣībatin fil-arḍi wa lā fī anfusikum illā fī kitābim min qabli an nabra'ahā, inna żālika ‘alallāhi yasīr(un).

No calamity strikes the earth or yourselves but is recorded in a Book before We bring it forth. That is easy for God

23

likailā ta'sau ‘alā mā fātakum wa lā tafraḥū bimā ātākum, wallāhu lā yuḥibbu kulla mukhtālin fakhūr(in).

So you do not grieve for what escapes you nor exult over what He gives you. God loves not the arrogant boasters

24

allażīna yabkhalūna wa ya'murūnan-nāsa bil-bukhl(i), wa may yatawalla fa'innallāha huwal-ganiyyul-ḥamīd(u).

those who are stingy and urge others to stinginess. Whoever turns away, God is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy

25

laqad arsalnā rusulanā bil-bayyināti wa anzalnā ma‘ahumul-kitāba wal-mīzāna liyaqūman-nāsu bil-qisṭ(i), wa anzalnal-ḥadīda fīhi ba'sun syadīduw wa manāfi‘u lin-nāsi wa liya‘lamallāhu may yanṣuruhū wa rusulahū bil-gaib(i), innallāha qawiyyun ‘azīz(un).

We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, revealed scriptures and the balance for justice among people, and created iron, with great strength and benefits for humanity, so God knows who aids His cause and His messengers unseen. God is Strong, Mighty

26

wa laqad arsalnā nūḥaw wa ibrāhīma wa ja‘alnā fī żurriyyatihiman-nubuwwata wal-kitāba fa minhum muhtad(in), wa kaṡīrum minhum fāsiqūn(a).

We sent Noah and Abraham, granting prophethood and scripture to their descendants. Some were guided, but many were rebellious

27

Ṡumma qaffainā ‘alā āṡārihim birusulinā wa qaffainā bi‘īsabni maryama wa ātaināhul-injīl(a), wa ja‘alnā fī qulūbil-lażīnattaba‘ūhu ra'fataw wa raḥmah(tan), wa rahbāniyyatanibtada‘ūhā mā katabnā ‘alaihim illabtigā'a riḍwānillāhi famā ra‘auhā ḥaqqa ri‘āyatihā, fa'ātainal-lażīna āmanū minhum ajrahum, wa kaṡīrum minhum fāsiqūn(a).

We sent messengers after them, including Jesus, son of Mary, to whom We gave the Gospel. We placed compassion and mercy in the hearts of his followers. They invented monasticism, which We did not prescribe, seeking God’s pleasure, but did not observe it rightly. We rewarded the believers among them, but many were rebellious

28

O believers, fear God and believe in His Messenger. He will grant you double mercy, provide a light to walk by, and forgive you. God is Forgiving, Merciful

29

li'allā ya‘lama ahlul-kitābi allā yaqdirūna ‘alā syai'im min faḍlillāhi wa annal-faḍla biyadillāhi yu'tīhi may yasyā'(u), wallāhu żul-faḍlil-‘aẓīm(i).

So the People of the Book know they have no claim to God’s grace unless they believe in Muhammad. Grace is in God’s hand, given to whom He wills. God possesses immense grace
