qālū yā mūsā immā an tulqiya wa immā an nakūna awwala man alqā.

They said, 'O Moses, will you throw first, or shall we throw?'

66

fa aujasa fī nafsihī khīfatam mūsā.

We said, 'Do not fear! You will surely prevail.

69

wa alqi mā fī yamīnika talqaf mā ṣana‘ū, innamā ṣana‘ū kaidu sāḥir(in), wa lā yufliḥus-sāḥiru ḥaiṡu atā.

Throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow what they have crafted. What they have crafted is only a magician’s trick, and a magician will not succeed, no matter where he comes from.'

70

fa ulqiyas-saḥaratu sujjadan qālū āmannā birabbi hārūna wa mūsā.

Then the magicians fell down in prostration, saying, 'We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.'

71

He (Pharaoh) said, 'You believed in him before I permitted you? He must be your leader who taught you magic. I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides and crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will know whose punishment is more severe and lasting.'

72

They said, 'We will never prefer you over the clear signs that have come to us, nor over the One who created us. So decree what you will; you can only decree for this worldly life.

73

innā āmannā birabbinā liyagfira lanā khaṭāyānā wa mā akrahtanā ‘alaihi minas-siḥr(i), wallāhu khairuw wa abqā.

Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and the magic you forced us to perform. Allah is better and more enduring.'

74

innahū may ya'ti rabbahū mujriman fa inna lahū jahannam(a), lā yamūtu fīhā wa lā yaḥyā.

Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a sinner—for him is Hell, where he neither dies nor lives.

75

wa may ya'tihī mu'minan qad ‘amilaṣ-ṣāliḥāti fa ulā'ika lahumud-darajātul-‘ulā.

But whoever comes to Him as a believer, having done righteous deeds—for them are the highest ranks,

76

jannātu ‘adnin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā, wa żālika jazā'u man tazakkā.

Gardens of Eden with rivers flowing beneath, where they will abide forever. That is the reward for those who purify themselves.

77

wa laqad auḥainā ilā mūsā an asri bi‘ibādī faḍrib lahum ṭarīqan fil-baḥri yabasā(n), lā takhāfu darakaw wa lā takhsyā.

And We revealed to Moses, 'Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea. Do not fear being overtaken, nor be afraid.'

78

fa atba‘ahum fir‘aunu bijunūdihī fa gasyiyahum minal-yammi mā gasyiyahum.

Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the sea overwhelmed and engulfed them.

79

wa aḍalla fir‘aunu qaumahū wa mā hadā.

And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.

80

yā banī isrā'īla qad anjainākum min ‘aduwwikum wa wā‘adnākum jānibaṭ-ṭūril-aimana wa nazzalnā ‘alaikumul-mannā was-salwā.

O Children of Israel! We saved you from your enemy, made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mount, and sent down to you manna and quails.

81

kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum, wa lā taṭgau fīhi fa yaḥilla ‘alaikum gaḍabī, wa may yaḥlil ‘alaihi gaḍabī faqad hawā.

Eat of the good things We have provided for you, and do not transgress, lest My wrath descend upon you. Whoever incurs My wrath is indeed ruined.

82

wa innī lagaffārul liman tāba wa āmana wa ‘amila ṣāliḥan ṡummahtadā.

But indeed, I am Most Forgiving to those who repent, believe, do righteous deeds, and then remain guided.

83

wa mā a‘jalaka ‘an qaumika yā mūsā.

'Why have you hastened ahead of your people, O Moses?'

84

qāla hum ulā'i ‘alā aṡarī wa ‘ajiltu ilaika rabbi litarḍā.

He said, 'They are following in my footsteps, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You may be pleased.'

85

qāla fa innā qad fatannā qaumaka mim ba‘dika wa aḍallahumus-sāmiriyy(u).

He (Allah) said, 'We have tested your people after you left, and the Samiri has led them astray.'

86

fa raja‘a mūsā ilā qaumihī gaḍbāna asifā(n), qāla yā qaumi alam ya‘idkum rabbukum wa‘dan ḥasanā(n), afaṭāla ‘alaikumul-‘ahdu am arattum ay yaḥilla ‘alaikum gaḍabum mir rabbikum fa akhlaftum mau‘idī.

So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, 'O my people! Did your Lord not promise you a good promise? Was the time too long for you, or did you wish for your Lord’s wrath to descend upon you, that you broke your promise to me?'

87

qālū mā akhlafnā mau‘idaka bimalkinā wa lākinnā ḥummilnā auzāram min zīnatil-qaumi fa qażafnāhā fa każālika alqas-sāmiriyy(u).

They said, 'We did not break our promise to you willingly, but we were made to carry burdens of the people’s ornaments, so we threw them (into the fire), and so did the Samiri.'

88

fa akhraja lahum ‘ijlan jasadal lahū khuwārun fa qālū hāżā ilāhukum wa ilāhu mūsā, fa nasiy(a).

Then he (the Samiri) produced for them a calf with a body and a lowing sound, and they said, 'This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot.'

89

afalā yarauna allā yarji‘u ilaihim qaulā(n), wa lā yamliku lahum ḍarraw wa lā naf‘ā(n).

Did they not see that it could not answer them or have power to harm or benefit them?

90

wa laqad qāla lahum hārūnu min qablu yā qaumi innamā futintum bih(ī), wa inna rabbakumur-raḥmānu fattabi‘ūnī wa aṭī‘ū amrī.

Aaron had already said to them, 'O my people! You are only being tested by it. Your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my command.'

91

qālū lan nabraḥa ‘alaihi ‘ākifīna ḥattā yarji‘a ilainā mūsā.

They said, 'We will not cease worshiping it until Moses returns to us.'

92

qāla yā hārūnu mā mana‘aka iż ra'aitahum ḍallū.

He (Moses) said, 'O Aaron! What prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

93

allā tattabi‘an(i), afa ‘aṣaita amrī.

from following me? Have you disobeyed my command?'

94

qāla yabna'umma lā ta'khuż biliḥyatī wa lā bira'sī, innī khasyītu an taqūla farraqta baina banī isrā'īla wa lam tarqub qaulī.

He (Aaron) said, 'O son of my mother! Do not seize my beard or my head. I feared you would say, “You have caused division among the Children of Israel and did not observe my instruction.”'

95

qāla famā khaṭbuka yā sāmiriyy(u).

He (Moses) said, 'What is your story, O Samiri?'

96

qāla baṣurtu bimā lam yabṣurū bihī fa qabaḍtu qabḍatam min aṡarir-rasūli fa nabażtuhā wa każālika sawwalat lī nafsī.

He said, 'I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful (of dust) from the messenger’s track and threw it in. Thus, my soul prompted me.'

97

qāla fażhab fa inna laka fil-ḥayāti an taqūla lā misās(a), wa inna laka mau‘idal lan tukhlafah(ū), wanẓur ilā ilāhikal-lażī ẓalta ‘alaihi ‘ākifā(n), lanuḥarriqannahū ṡumma lanansifannahū fil-yammi nasfā(n).

He (Moses) said, 'Begone! In this life, you will say, “Do not touch me,” and you have a promise (of punishment) you cannot escape. Look at your god, which you kept worshiping. We will burn it and scatter its ashes into the sea.'

98

innamā ilāhukumullāhul-lażī lā ilāha illā huw(a), wasi‘a kulla syai'in ‘ilmā(n).

Your God is only Allah, there is no god but He. His knowledge encompasses everything.

99

każālika naquṣṣu ‘alaika min ambā'i mā sabaq(a), wa qad ātaināka mil ladunnā żikrā(n).

Thus, We relate to you (Muhammad) some stories of what has passed, and We have given you a reminder (the Qur’an) from Us.

100

man a‘raḍa ‘anhu fa innahū yaḥmilu yaumal-qiyāmati wizrā(n).

Whoever turns away from it will bear a heavy burden (of sin) on the Day of Resurrection,

101

khālidīna fīh(i), wa sā'a lahum yaumal-qiyāmati ḥimlā(n).

abiding in it forever. What a terrible burden for them on the Day of Resurrection,

102

yauma yunfakhu fiṣ-ṣūri wa naḥsyurul-mujrimīna yauma'iżin zurqā(n).

the Day the trumpet is blown (the second time), and We gather the sinners, their eyes dim with gloom,

103

yatakhāfatūna bainahum il labiṡtum illā ‘asyrā(n).

whispering to one another, 'You stayed (in the world) no more than ten (days).'

104

naḥnu a‘lamu bimā yaqūlūna iż yaqūlu amṡaluhum ṭarīqatan il labiṡtum illā yaumā(n).

We know best what they will say, when the most upright among them says, 'You stayed no more than a day.'

105

wa yas'alūnaka ‘anil-jibāli fa qul yansifuhā rabbī nasfā(n).

They ask you about the mountains. Say, 'My Lord will shatter them into dust,

106

fa yażaruhā qā‘an ṣafṣafā(n).

leaving them a flat, barren plain,

107

lā tarā fīhā ‘iwajaw wa lā amtā(n).

where you will see no curve or ridge.'

108

yauma'iżiy yattabi‘ūnad-dā‘iya lā ‘iwaja lah(ū), wa khasya‘atil-aṣwātu lir-raḥmāni falā tasma‘u illā hamsā(n).

On that Day, they will follow the Caller with no deviation. Voices will be hushed before the Most Merciful, and you will hear nothing but a faint murmur.

109

yauma'iżil lā tanfa‘usy-syafā‘atu illā man ażina lahur-raḥmānu wa raḍiya lahū qaulā(n).

On that Day, intercession will not benefit except for those whom the Most Merciful permits and whose word He accepts.

110

He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but their knowledge cannot encompass Him.

111

wa ‘anatil-wujūhu lil-ḥayyil-qayyūm(i), wa qad khāba man ḥamala ẓulmā(n).

All faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Those who carry injustice will fail.

112

But whoever does righteous deeds while believing will fear neither injustice nor deprivation.

113

Thus, We have sent down the Qur’an in Arabic, and We have explained in it some of the warnings, that they may fear Allah or that it may cause them to remember.

114

fa ta‘ālallāhul-malikul-ḥaqq(u), wa lā ta‘jal bil-qur'āni min qabli ay yuqḍā ilaika waḥyuh(ū), wa qur rabbi zidnī ‘ilmā(n).

Exalted is Allah, the True King. Do not hasten (to recite) the Qur’an before its revelation to you is complete, and say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'

115

wa laqad ‘ahidnā ilā ādama min qablu fa nasiya wa lam najid lahū ‘azmā(n).

We had already commanded Adam before, but he forgot, and We found no firm resolve in him.

116

wa iż qulnā lil-malā'ikatisjudū li'ādama fa sajadū illā iblīsa abā.

When We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' they prostrated, except Iblis; he refused.

117

fa qulnā yā ādamu inna hāżā ‘aduwwul laka wa lizaujika falā yukhrijannakumā minal-jannati fa tasyqā.

We said, 'O Adam! This (Iblis) is an enemy to you and your wife, so let him not expel you from Paradise, lest you fall into misery.

118

inna laka allā tajū‘a fīhā wa lā ta‘rā.

Indeed, there you will neither hunger nor be unclothed,

119

wa annaka lā taẓma'u fīhā wa lā taḍḥā.

nor will you thirst or suffer from the sun’s heat.'

120

fa waswasa ilaihisy-syaiṭānu qāla yā ādamu hal adulluka ‘alā syajaratil-khuldi wa mulkil lā yablā.

But Satan whispered to him, saying, 'O Adam! Shall I show you the tree of eternity and a kingdom that never decays?'

121

fa akalā minhā fa badat lahumā sau'ātuhumā wa ṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ‘alaihimā miw waraqil-jannah(ti), wa ‘aṣā ādamu rabbahū fa gawā.

So they both ate from it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began covering themselves with the leaves of Paradise. Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray.

122

Ṡummajtabāhu rabbuhū fa tāba ‘alaihi wa hadā.

Then his Lord chose him, accepted his repentance, and guided him.

123

qālahbiṭā minhā jamī‘am ba‘ḍukum liba‘ḍin ‘aduww(un), fa immā ya'tiyannakum minnī hudā(n), fa manittaba‘a hudāya falā yaḍillu wa lā yasyqā.

He said, 'Descend, both of you, from it (Paradise), as enemies to one another. When guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer.

124

wa man a‘raḍa ‘an żikrī fa inna lahū ma‘īsyatan ḍankaw wa naḥsyuruhū yaumal-qiyāmati a‘mā.

But whoever turns away from My reminder will have a life of hardship, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.'

125

qāla rabbi lima ḥasyartanī a‘mā wa qad kuntu baṣīrā(n).

He will say, 'My Lord, why have You gathered me blind when I could see before?'

126

qāla każālika atatka āyātunā fa nasītahā, wa każālikal-yauma tunsā.

He will say, 'Thus, Our signs came to you, but you ignored them, so today you are ignored.'

127

Thus, We recompense those who transgress and do not believe in their Lord’s signs. The punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more lasting.

128

afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknā qablahum minal-qurūni yamsyūna fī masākinihim, inna fī żālika la'āyātil li'ulin nuhā.

Does it not guide them how many generations We destroyed before them, whose ruins they walk among? Indeed, in that are signs for those who reason.

129

wa lau lā kalimatun sabaqat mir rabbika lakāna lizāmaw wa ajalum musammā(n).

Had it not been for a prior decree from your Lord and an appointed term, (punishment) would have come upon them.

130

So be patient (Muhammad) with what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting, and glorify Him in the hours of the night and at the ends of the day, that you may find contentment.

131

wa lā tamuddanna ‘ainaika ilā mā matta‘nā bihī azwājam minhum zahratal-ḥayātid-dun-yā, linaftinahum fīh(i), wa rizqu rabbika khairuw wa abqā.

Do not cast your eyes toward the pleasures We have granted to some of them, as a fleeting adornment of worldly life to test them. Your Lord’s provision is better and more lasting.

132

wa'mur ahlaka biṣ-ṣalāti waṣṭabir ‘alaihā, lā nas'aluka rizqā(n), naḥnu narzuquk(a), wal-‘āqibatu lit-taqwā.

Command your family to pray and be steadfast in it. We do not ask you for provision; We provide for you. The outcome is for those who fear Allah.

133

wa qālū lau lā ya'tīnā bi'āyatim mir rabbih(ī), awalam ta'tihim bayyinatu mā fiṣ-ṣuḥufil-ūlā.

They say, 'Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?' Has not a clear proof come to them in what is in the former scriptures?

134

wa lau annā ahlaknāhum bi‘ażābim min qablihī laqālū rabbanā lau lā arsalta ilainā rasūlan fa nattabi‘a āyātika min qabli an nażilla wa nakhzā.

Had We destroyed them with punishment before (the Qur’an), they would have said, 'Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could follow Your signs before being humiliated and disgraced?'

135

qul kullum mutarabbiṣun fa tarabbaṣū, fa sata‘lamūna man aṣḥābuṣ-ṣirāṭis-sawiyyi wa manihtadā.

Say, 'Each is waiting, so wait! You will soon know who follows the straight path and who is guided.'
