alif lām rā, kitābun anzalnāhu ilaika litukhrijan-nāsa minaẓ-ẓulumāti ilan-nūr(i), bi'iżni rabbihim ilā ṣirāṭil-‘azīzil-ḥamīd(i).

Alif Lam Ra. This is a Book We have revealed to you (Muhammad) so that you may lead mankind out of darkness into radiant light by their Lord’s permission, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.

2

allāhil-lażī lahū mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa wailul lil-kāfirīna min ‘ażābin syadīd(in).

Allah, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. Woe to the disbelievers for a severe punishment,

3

allażīna yastaḥibbūnal-ḥayātad-dun-yā ‘alal-ākhirati wa yaṣuddūna ‘an sabīlillāhi wa yabgūnahā ‘iwajā(n), ulā'ika fī ḍalālim ba‘īd(in).

those who prefer the life of this world over the Hereafter, obstruct people from Allah’s path, and seek to make it crooked. They are far astray.

4

wa mā arsalnā mir rasūlin illā bilisāni qaumihī liyubayyina lahum, fa yuḍillullāhu may yasyā'u wa yahdī may yasyā'(u), wa huwal-‘azīzul-ḥakīm(u).

We sent no messenger except speaking the language of his people to clarify for them. Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. He is the Almighty, the Wise.

5

wa laqad arsalnā mūsā bi'āyātinā an akhrij qaumaka minaẓ-ẓulumāti ilan-nūr(i), wa żakkirhum bi'ayyāmillāh(i), inna fī żālika la'āyātil likulli ṣabbārin syakūr(in).

Indeed, We sent Moses with Our signs, saying, 'Lead your people out of darkness into light and remind them of the days of Allah.' In that are signs for every patient and grateful person.

6

wa iż qāla mūsā liqaumihiżkurū ni‘matallāhi ‘alaikum iż anjākum min āli fir‘auna yasūmūnakum sū'al-‘ażābi wa yużabbiḥūna abnā'akum wa yastaḥyūna nisā'akum, wa fī żālikum balā'um mir rabbikum ‘aẓīm(un).

And when Moses said to his people, 'Remember Allah’s favor upon you when He saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who afflicted you with cruel torment, slaughtered your sons, and spared your daughters. In that was a great trial from your Lord.'

7

wa iż ta'ażżana rabbukum la'in syakartum la'azīdannakum wa la'in kafartum inna ‘ażābī lasyadīd(un).

And when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase your favors, but if you deny My favors, My punishment is indeed severe.'

8

wa qāla mūsā in takfurū antum wa man fil-arḍi jamī‘ā(n), fa innallāha laganiyyun ḥamīd(un).

Moses said, 'If you and all the people on earth deny Allah, indeed, Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.'

9

alam ya'tikum naba'ul-lażīna min qablikum qaumi nūḥiw wa ‘ādiw wa ṡamūd(a), wal-lażīna mim ba‘dihim, lā ya‘lamuhum illallāh(u), jā'athum rusuluhum bil-bayyināti fa raddū aidiyahum fī afwāhihim wa qālū innā kafarnā bimā ursiltum bihī wa innā lafī syakkim mimmā tad‘ūnanā ilaihi murīb(in).

Has not the news reached you of those before you—the people of Noah, ‘Ad, Thamud, and those after them? None knows them but Allah. Their messengers came with clear proofs, but they put their hands over their mouths and said, 'We disbelieve in what you have been sent with, and we are in disquieting doubt about what you call us to.'

10

qālat rusuluhum afillāhi syakkun fāṭiris-samāwāti wal-arḍ(i), yad‘ūkum liyagfira lakum min żunūbikum wa yu'akhkhirakum ilā ajalim musammā(n), qālū in antum illā basyarum miṡlunā, turīdūna an taṣuddūnā ‘ammā kāna ya‘budu ābā'unā fa'tūnā bisulṭānim mubīn(in).

Their messengers said, 'Is there doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you to forgive some of your sins and grant you respite until an appointed time.' They said, 'You are only humans like us, seeking to prevent us from worshiping what our forefathers worshiped. So bring us clear proof.'

11

qālat lahum rusuluhum in naḥnu illā basyarum miṡlukum wa lākinnallāha yamunnu ‘alā may yasyā'u min ‘ibādih(ī), wa mā kāna lanā an na'tiyakum bisulṭānin illā bi'iżnillāh(i), wa ‘alallāhi falyatawakkalil-mu'minūn(a).

Their messengers said to them, 'We are only humans like you, but Allah bestows His grace on whom He wills of His servants. It is not for us to bring you proof except by Allah’s permission. Let the believers put their trust in Allah alone.'

12

wa mā lanā allā natawakkala ‘alallāhi wa qad hadānā subulanā, wa lanaṣbiranna ‘alā mā āżaitumūnā, wa ‘alallāhi falyatawakkalil-mutawakkilūn(a).

'And why should we not trust in Allah when He has guided us to our paths? We will surely endure your persecution. Let those who trust put their trust in Allah alone.'

13

wa qālal-lażīna kafarū lirusulihim lanukhrijannakum min arḍinā au lata‘ūdunna fī millatinā, fa auḥā ilaihim rabbuhum lanuhlikannaẓ-ẓālimīn(a).

The disbelievers said to their messengers, 'We will surely expel you from our land unless you return to our religion.' Their Lord revealed to them, 'We will certainly destroy the wrongdoers,'

14

wa lanuskinannakumul-arḍa mim ba‘dihim, żālika liman khāfa maqāmī wa khāfa wa‘īd(i).

'and settle you in the land after them. This is for those who fear standing before Me and fear My warnings.'

15

wastaftaḥū wa khāba kullu jabbārin ‘anīd(in).

They sought victory, and every stubborn tyrant was defeated.

16

miw warā'ihī jahannamu wa yusqā mim mā'in ṣadīd(in).

Before him is Hell, and he will be given pus to drink,

17

which he sips but can hardly swallow. Death comes to him from every side, yet he does not die, and before him is a harsh punishment.

18

maṡalul-lażīna kafarū birabbihim a‘māluhum karamādinisytaddat bihir-rīḥu fī yaumin ‘āṣif(in), lā yaqdirūna mimmā kasabū ‘alā syai'(in), żālika huwaḍ-ḍalālul-ba‘īd(u).

The deeds of those who disbelieve in their Lord are like ashes blown away by a fierce wind on a stormy day. They have no control over what they earned. That is the farthest misguidance.

19

alam tara annallāha khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqq(i), iy yasya' yużhibkum wa ya'ti bikhalqin jadīd(in).

Do you not see that Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can remove you and bring a new creation.

20

wa mā żālika ‘alallāhi bi‘azīz(in).

And that is not difficult for Allah.

21

wa barazū lillāhi jamī‘an fa qālaḍ-ḍu‘afā'u lil-lażīnastakbarū innā kunnā lakum taba‘an fahal antum mugnūna ‘annā min ‘ażābillāhi min syai'(in), qālū lau hadānallāhu lahadainākum, sawā'un ‘alainā ajazi‘nā am ṣabarnā mā lanā mim maḥīṣ(in).

They will all appear before Allah, and the weak will say to the arrogant, 'We were your followers. Can you avert any of Allah’s punishment from us?' They will reply, 'Had Allah guided us, we would have guided you. It is the same for us whether we lament or endure; we have no escape.'

22

wa qālasy-syaiṭānu lammā quḍiyal-amru innallāha wa‘adakum wa‘dal-ḥaqqi wa wa‘attukum fa akhlaftukum, wa mā kāna liya ‘alaikum min sulṭānin illā an da‘autukum fastajabtum lī, falā talūmūnī wa lūmū anfusakum, wa mā ana bimuṣrikhikum wa mā antum bimuṣrikhiyy(a), innī kafartu bimā asyraktumūni min qabl(u), innaẓ-ẓālimīna lahum ‘ażābun alīm(un).

When the matter is decided, Satan will say, 'Indeed, Allah gave you a true promise, but I promised you and failed you. I had no authority over you except to call you, and you responded. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I reject your associating me with Allah before.' Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment.

23

wa udkhilal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā bi'iżni rabbihim, taḥiyyatuhum fīhā salām(un).

Those who believe and do righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein by their Lord’s permission. Their greeting therein will be, 'Peace.'

24

alam tara kaifa ḍaraballāhu maṡalan kalimatan ṭayyibatan kasyajaratin ṭayyibatin aṣluhā ṡābituw wa far‘uhā fis-samā'(i).

Do you not see how Allah presents the parable of a good word as a good tree, its roots firm and its branches reaching the sky,

25

tu'tī ukulahā kulla ḥīnim bi'iżni rabbihā, wa yaḍribullāhul-amṡāla lin-nāsi la‘allahum yatażakkarūn(a).

yielding its fruit at all times by its Lord’s permission? Allah sets forth parables for mankind that they may reflect.

26

wa maṡalu kalimatin khabīṡatin kasyajaratin khabīṡatinijtuṡṡat min fauqil-arḍi mā lahā min qarār(in).

And the parable of an evil word is like an evil tree, uprooted from the earth, with no stability.

27

yuṡabbitullāhul-lażīna āmanū bil-qauliṣ-ṣābiti fil-ḥayātid-dun-yā wa fil-ākhirah(ti), wa yuḍillullāhuẓ-ẓālimīn(a), wa yaf‘alullāhu mā yasyā'(u).

Allah strengthens the believers with a firm word in this life and the Hereafter, but He leaves the wrongdoers to stray, and Allah does what He wills.

28

alam tara ilal-lażīna baddalū ni‘matallāhi kufraw wa aḥallū qaumahum dāral-bawār(i).

Do you not see those who exchanged Allah’s favor for disbelief and led their people to the abode of ruin?

29

jahannama yaṣlaunahā, wa bi'sal-qarār(u).

That is Hell, which they will enter—a wretched abode.

30

wa ja‘alū lillāhi andādal liyuḍillū ‘an sabīlih(ī), qul tamatta‘ū fa inna maṣīrakum ilan-nār(i).

They set up rivals to Allah to mislead people from His path. Say (Muhammad), 'Enjoy yourselves, for your destination is the Fire.'

31

Say (Muhammad) to My believing servants, 'Establish prayer and spend from what We have provided you, secretly or openly, before a Day comes when there is no trade or friendship.'

32

allāhul-lażī khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arḍa wa anzala minas-samā'i mā'an fa akhraja bihī minaṡ-ṡamarāti rizqal lakum, wa sakhkhara lakumul-fulka litajriya fil-baḥri bi'amrih(ī), wa sakhkhara lakumul-anhār(a).

It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky, producing fruits as provision for you. He subjected ships to sail the sea by His command and subjected rivers for you.

33

wa sakhkhara lakumusy-syamsa wal-qamara dā'ibaīn(i), wa sakhkhara lakumul-laila wan-nahār(a).

He subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course, and subjected the night and day for you.

34

He has given you all that you asked of Him. If you tried to count Allah’s favors, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is most unjust and ungrateful.

35

wa iż qāla ibrāhīmu rabbij‘al hāżal-balada āminaw wajnubnī wa baniyya an na‘budal-aṣnām(a).

And when Abraham said, 'My Lord, make this city (Mecca) secure and keep me and my descendants from worshiping idols.'

36

rabbi innahunna aḍlalna kaṡīram minan-nās(i), faman tabi‘anī fa innahū minnī, wa man ‘aṣānī fa innaka gafūrur raḥīm(un).

'My Lord, they have led many people astray. Whoever follows me belongs to me, and whoever disobeys me—You are Forgiving, Merciful.'

37

rabbanā innī askantu min żurriyyatī biwādin gairi żī zar‘in ‘inda baitikal-muḥarram(i), rabbanā liyuqīmuṣ-ṣalāta faj‘al af'idatam minan-nāsi tahwī ilaihim warzuqhum minaṡ-ṡamarāti la‘allahum yasykurūn(a).

'Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a barren valley near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so they may establish prayer. Make the hearts of people incline toward them and provide them with fruits, that they may be grateful.'

38

rabbanā innaka ta‘lamu mā nukhfī wa mā nu‘lin(u), wa mā yakhfā ‘alallāhi min syai'in fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā'(i).

'Our Lord, You know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing is hidden from Allah on earth or in the heavens.'

39

al-ḥamdu lillāhil-lażī wahaba lī ‘alal-kibari ismā‘īla wa isḥāq(a), inna rabbī lasamī‘ud-du‘ā'(i).

'Praise be to Allah, who granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age. Indeed, my Lord hears prayers.'

40

rabbij‘alnī muqīmaṣ-ṣalāti wa min żurriyyatī, rabbanā wa taqabbal du‘ā'(i).

'My Lord, make me and my descendants steadfast in prayer. Our Lord, accept my supplication.'

41

rabbanagfir lī wa liwālidayya wa lil-mu'minīna yauma yaqūmul-ḥisāb(u).

'Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.'

42

wa lā taḥsabannallāha gāfilan ‘ammā ya‘maluẓ-ẓālimūn(a), innamā yu'akhkhiruhum liyaumin tasykhaṣu fīhil-abṣār(u).

Do not think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when their eyes will stare in horror,

43

muhṭi‘īna muqni‘ī ru'ūsihim lā yartaddu ilaihim ṭarfuhum, wa af'idatuhum hawā'(un).

rushing forward, heads raised, eyes unblinking, and hearts void.

44

wa anżirin-nāsa yauma ya'tīhimul-‘ażāb(u), fa yaqūlul-lażīna ẓalamū rabbanā akhkhirnā ilā ajalin qarīb(in), nujib da‘wataka wa nattabi‘ir-rusul(a), awalam takūnū aqsamtum min qablu mā lakum min zawāl(in).

Warn mankind (Muhammad) of the Day when the punishment comes upon them, and the wrongdoers say, 'Our Lord, grant us a brief respite, and we will answer Your call and follow the messengers.' It will be said, 'Did you not swear before that you would never perish?'

45

wa sakantum fī masākinil-lażīna ẓalamū anfusahum wa tabayyana lakum kaifa fa‘alnā bihim wa ḍarabnā lakumul-amṡāl(a).

'You dwelt in the homes of those who wronged themselves, and it was clear to you how We dealt with them. We presented parables for you.'

46

wa qad makarū makrahum wa ‘indallāhi makruhum, wa in kāna makruhum litazūla minhul-jibāl(u).

They devised their plots, but their plots are known to Allah, even if their plots could move mountains.

47

falā taḥsabannallāha mukhlifa wa‘dihī rusulah(ū), innallāha ‘azīzun żun tiqām(in).

Do not think that Allah will break His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allah is Almighty, capable of retribution.

48

yauma tubaddalul-arḍu gairal-arḍi was-samāwātu wa barazū lillāhil-wāḥidil-qahhār(i).

On the Day when the earth is replaced with another earth, and the heavens too, and they stand before Allah, the One, the Almighty.

49

wa taral-mujrimīna yauma'iżim muqarranīna fil-aṣfād(i).

On that Day, you will see the sinners bound together in chains,

50

sarābīluhum min qaṭirāniw wa tagsyā wujūhahumun-nār(u).

their garments of tar, their faces covered by the Fire,

51

liyajziyallāhu kulla nafsim mā kasabat, innallāha sarī‘ul-ḥisāb(i).

so that Allah may recompense each soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allah is swift in reckoning.

52

hāżā balāgul lin-nāsi wa liyunżarū bihī wa liya‘lamū annamā huwa ilāhuw wāḥiduw wa liyażżakkara ulul-albāb(i).

This (Qur’an) is a clear message for mankind, that they may be warned by it, know that He is the One God, and that those with understanding may take heed.
