You worship mere names you and your ancestors invented, without Allah’s authority. Judgment is Allah’s alone; He commands worship of Him only. This is the true faith, but most don’t know.

yā ṣāḥibayis-sijni ammā aḥadukumā fa yasqī rabbahū khamrā(n), wa ammal-ākharu fa yuṣlabu fa ta'kuluṭ-ṭairu mir ra'sih(ī), quḍiyal-amrul-lażī fīhi tastaftiyān(i).

O prison companions, one of you will serve wine to his master; the other will be crucified, birds eating his head. Your matter is decided.

42

wa qāla lil-lażī ẓanna annahū nājim minhumażkurnī ‘inda rabbik(a), fa ansāhusy-syaiṭānu żikra rabbihī fa labiṡa fis-sijni biḍ‘a sinīn(a).

To the one he thought would be saved, he said, 'Mention me to your master.' Satan made him forget, so Yusuf stayed in prison several years.

43

The king said, 'I dreamt seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones, seven green ears and seven dry. O nobles, interpret my dream if you can.'

44

qālū aḍgāṡu aḥlām(in), wa mā naḥnu bita'wīlil-aḥlāmi bi‘ālimīn(a).

They said, 'These are confused dreams; we can’t interpret them.'

45

wa qālal-lażī najā minhumā waddakara ba‘da ummatin ana unabbi'ukum bita'wīlihī fa arsilūn(i).

The saved prisoner, now recalling, said, 'I’ll bring you its interpretation; send me to Yusuf.'

46

yūsufu ayyuhaṣ-ṣiddīqu aftinā fī sab‘i baqarātin simāniy ya'kuluhunna sab‘un ‘ijāfuw wa sab‘i sumbulātin khuḍriw wa ukhara yābisāt(in), la‘allī arji‘u ilan-nāsi la‘allahum ya‘lamūn(a).

Yusuf, O truthful one, interpret seven fat cows eaten by seven lean, seven green ears and seven dry, so I may inform the people.

47

qāla tazra‘ūna sab‘a sinīna da'abā(n), famā ḥaṣattum fa żarūhu fī sumbulihī illā qalīlam mimmā ta'kulūn(a).

Yusuf said, 'Farm seven years diligently; leave what you reap in its ears, except what you eat.'

48

Then come seven hard years, consuming what you saved, except a little you store.

49

Afterward, a year comes with ample rain, when people press wine.

50

wa qālal-maliku'tūnī bih(ī), falammā jā'ahur-rasūlu qālarji‘ ilā rabbika fas'alhu mā bālun-niswatil-lātī qaṭṭa‘na aidiyahunn(a), inna rabbī bikaidihinna ‘alīm(un).

The king said, 'Bring him to me.' When the messenger came, Yusuf said, 'Return to your master; ask him about the women who cut their hands. My Lord knows their deceit.'

51

qāla mā khaṭbukunna iż rāwattunna yūsufa ‘an nafsih(ī), qulna ḥāsya lillāhi mā ‘alimnā ‘alaihi min sū'(in), qālatimra'atul-‘azīzil-āna ḥaṣḥaṣal-ḥaqq(u), ana rāwattuhū ‘an nafsihī wa innahū laminaṣ-ṣādiqīn(a).

The king asked the women, 'What happened when you sought to seduce Yusuf?' They said, 'Perfect is Allah; we found no fault in him.' Alis’s wife said, 'Now the truth is clear; I seduced him, and he’s truthful.'

52

Żālika liya‘lama annī lam akhunhu bil-gaibi wa annallāha lā yahdī kaidal-khā'inīn(a).

Yusuf said, 'This proves I didn’t betray my master in his absence. Allah doesn’t guide traitors’ plots.'

53

wa mā ubarri'u nafsī, innan-nafsa la'ammāratum bis-sū'i illā mā raḥima rabbī, inna rabbī gafūrur raḥīm(un).

I don’t claim innocence; the soul incites evil, except what my Lord mercies. My Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

54

wa qālal-maliku'tūnī bihī astakhliṣhu linafsī, falammā kallamahū qāla innakal-yauma ladainā makīnun amīn(un).

The king said, 'Bring him; I’ll appoint him close to me.' After speaking, he said, 'Today, you’re trusted and honored among us.'

55

qālaj‘alnī ‘alā khazā'inil-arḍ(i), innī ḥafīẓun ‘alīm(un).

Yusuf said, 'Make me treasurer of Egypt; I’m a skilled guardian, knowledgeable.'

56

Thus, We established Yusuf in Egypt, to settle where he wished. We grant mercy to whom We will, never wasting the righteous’ reward.

57

The Hereafter’s reward is better for those who believe and fear Allah.

58

wa jā'a ikhwatu yūsufa fa dakhalū ‘alaihi fa ‘arafahum wa hum lahū munkirūn(a).

Yusuf’s brothers came and entered his presence; he knew them, but they didn’t recognize him.

59

wa lammā jahhazahum bijahāzihim qāla'tūnī bi'akhil lakum min abīkum, alā tarauna annī ūfil-kaila wa ana khairul-munzilīn(a).

Preparing their provisions, he said, 'Bring your half-brother; don’t you see I give full measure and host generously?'

60

fa illam ta'tūnī bihī falā kaila lakum ‘indī wa lā taqrabūn(i).

If you don’t bring him, you’ll get no grain from me, nor approach me.

61

qālū sanurāwidu ‘anhu abāhu wa innā lafā‘ilūn(a).

They said, 'We’ll persuade his father, and we’ll surely do it.'

62

He told his servants, 'Put their goods in their saddlebags; they’ll find them upon returning, encouraging their return.'

63

falammā raja‘ū ilā abīhim qālū yā abānā muni‘a minnal-kailu fa arsil ma‘anā akhānā naktal wa innā lahū laḥāfiẓūn(a).

Returning to their father, they said, 'O father, grain is denied us without our brother. Send him with us to secure provisions; we’ll guard him.'

64

qāla hal āmanukum ‘alaihi illā kamā amintukum ‘alā akhīhi min qabl(u), fallāhu khairun ḥāfiẓaw wa huwa arḥamur-rāḥimīn(a).

Yaqub said, 'Should I trust you with him as I did his brother before? Allah is the best Protector, Most Merciful.'

65

wa lammā fataḥū matā‘ahum wajadū biḍā‘atahum ruddat ilaihim, qālū yā abānā mā nabgī, hāżihī biḍā‘atunā ruddat ilainā wa namīru ahlanā wa naḥfaẓu akhānā wa nazdādu kaila ba‘īr(in), żālika kailuy yasīr(un).

Opening their bags, they found their goods returned. They said, 'O father, what more can we ask? Our goods are back; we’ll feed our family, protect our brother, and gain extra provisions—an easy measure.'

66

Yaqub said, 'I won’t send him until you swear by Allah to bring him back, unless you’re overwhelmed.' After their oath, he said, 'Allah witnesses our words.'

67

wa qāla yā baniyya lā tadkhulū mim bābiw wāḥidiw wadkhulū min abwābim mutafarriqah(tin), wa mā ugnī ‘ankum minallāhi min syai'(in), inil-ḥukmu illā lillāh(i), ‘alaihi tawakkaltu wa ‘alaihi falyatawakkalil-mutawakkilūn(a).

He said, 'My sons, don’t enter by one gate; use different gates. I can’t shield you from Allah’s decree. Judgment is His alone; in Him I trust, as should all who trust.'

68

wa lammā dakhalū min ḥaiṡu amarahum abūhum, mā kāna yugnī ‘anhum minallāhi min syai'in illā ḥājatan fī nafsi ya‘qūba qaḍāhā, wa innahū lażū ‘ilmil limā ‘allamnāhu wa lākinna akṡaran-nāsi lā ya‘lamūn(a).

Entering as their father instructed didn’t avert Allah’s decree, but fulfilled Yaqub’s wish. He had knowledge We taught him, but most people don’t know.

69

wa lammā dakhalū ‘alā yūsufa āwā ilaihi akhāhu qāla innī akhūka falā tabta'is bimā kānū ya‘malūn(a).

Entering Yusuf’s presence, he took his brother aside, saying, 'I’m your brother; don’t grieve over their deeds.'

70

falammā jahhazahum bijahāzihim ja‘las-siqāyata fī raḥli akhīhi ṡumma ażżana mu'ażżinun ayyatuhal-‘īru innakum lasāriqūn(a).

Preparing their provisions, he placed a cup in his brother’s bag. A caller shouted, 'O caravan, you’re thieves!'

71

qālū wa aqbalū ‘alaihim māżā tafqidūn(a).

They turned, asking, 'What’s missing?'

72

They said, 'The king’s cup; whoever returns it gets a camel’s load of grain. I guarantee it.'

73

qālū tallāhi laqad ‘alimtum mā ji'tanā linufsida fil-arḍi wa mā kunnā sāriqīn(a).

They said, 'By Allah, you know we didn’t come to cause trouble; we’re not thieves.'

74

qālū famā jazā'uhū in kuntum kāżibīn(a).

They asked, 'What’s the penalty if you’re liars?'

75

qālū jazā'uhū maw wujida fī raḥlihī fa huwa jazā'uh(ū), każālika najziẓ-ẓālimīn(a).

They said, 'The penalty is he in whose bag it’s found becomes the punishment. Thus, we judge wrongdoers.'

76

fa bada'a bi'au‘iyatihim qabla wi‘ā'i akhīhi ṡummastakhrajahā miw wi‘ā'i akhīh(i), każālika kidnā liyūsuf(a), mā kāna liya'khuża akhāhu fī dīnil-maliki illā ay yasyā'allāh(u), narfa‘u darajātim man nasyā'(u), wa fauqa kulli żī ‘ilmin ‘alīm(un).

He checked their bags before his brother’s, then found the cup in his brother’s bag. Thus, We planned for Yusuf; he couldn’t detain his brother under the king’s law unless Allah willed. We raise whom We will; above every knower is One All-Knowing.

77

They said, 'If he stole, his brother stole before.' Yusuf hid his frustration, saying inwardly, 'Your state is worse; Allah knows your claims.'

78

qālū yā ayyuhal-‘azīzu inna lahū aban syaikhan kabīran fa khuż aḥadanā makānah(ū), innā narāka minal-muḥsinīn(a).

They said, 'O Aziz, he has an aged father; take one of us instead. We see you as righteous.'

79

qāla ma‘āżallāhi an na'khuża illā maw wajadnā matā‘anā ‘indah(ū), innā iżal laẓālimūn(a).
