yā ayyuhan-nāsuttaqū rabbakumul-lażī khalaqakum min nafsiw wāḥidatiw wa khalaqa minhā zaujahā wa baṡṡa minhumā rijālan kaṡīraw wa nisā'ā(n), wattaqullāhal-lażī tasā'alūna bihī wal-arḥām(a), innallāha kāna ‘alaikum raqībā(n).

O mankind! Fear your Lord who created you from a single soul (Adam), and from it created its mate (Eve), and from them both spread many men and women. Fear Allah through whom you demand your rights from one another and (maintain) family ties. Indeed, Allah is ever watching over you.

2

wa ātul-yatāmā amwālahum wa lā tatabaddalul-khabīṡa biṭ-ṭayyib(i), wa lā ta'kulū amwālahum ilā amwālikum, innahū kāna ḥūban kabīrā(n).

Give the orphans (who have reached adulthood) their property, and do not substitute the good with the bad, nor consume their property with your own. Indeed, that is a great sin.

3

wa in khiftum allā tuqsiṭū fil-yatāmā fankiḥū mā ṭāba lakum minan-nisā'i maṡnā wa ṡulāṡa wa rubā‘(a), fa in khiftum allā ta‘dilū fa wāḥidatan au mā malakat aimānukum, żālika adnā allā ta‘ūlū.

If you fear that you will not be just towards the orphan girls (if you marry them), then marry women of your choice: two, three, or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then (marry) only one or the female slaves you possess. That is more likely to prevent you from doing injustice.

4

wa ātun-nisā'a ṣaduqātihinna niḥlah(tan), fa in ṭibna lakum ‘an syai'im minhu nafsan fa kulūhu hanī'am marī'ā(n).

Give the women (you marry) their dowry as a willing gift. Then, if they willingly give you a portion of it, accept it and enjoy it with pleasure.

5

wa lā tu'tus-sufahā'a amwālakumul-latī ja‘alallāhu lakum qiyāmaw warzuqūhum fīhā waksūhum wa qūlū lahum qaulam ma‘rūfā(n).

Do not give the foolish ones the property (of the orphans) that Allah has made a means of sustenance for you. Provide for them and clothe them from it, and speak to them kind words.

6

wabtalul-yatāmā ḥattā iżā balagun-nikāḥ(a), fa in ānastum minhum rusydan fadfa‘ū ilaihim amwālahum, wa lā ta'kulūhā isrāfaw wa bidāran ay yakbarū, wa man kāna ganiyyan falyasta‘fif, wa man kāna faqīran falya'kul bil-ma‘rūf(i), fa iżā dafa‘tum ilaihim amwālahum fa asyhidū ‘alaihim, wa kafā billāhi ḥasībā(n).

Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. Then, if you find them sound in judgment, hand over their property to them. Do not consume it excessively or hastily before they grow up. Whoever (among the guardians) is rich should refrain (from taking it), and whoever is poor may consume it reasonably. When you hand over their property to them, have witnesses present. And Allah is sufficient as a Reckoner.

7

lir-rijāli naṣībum mimmā tarakal-wālidāni wal-aqrabūn(a), wa lin-nisā'i naṣībum mimmā tarakal-wālidāni wal-aqrabūna mimmā qalla minhu au kaṡur(a), naṣībam mafrūḍā(n).

Men have a share of the inheritance left by parents and relatives, and women have a share of the inheritance left by parents and relatives, whether it is little or much, a determined share.

8

wa iżā ḥaḍaral-qismata ulul-qurbā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīnu farzuqūhum minhu wa qūlū lahum qaulam ma‘rūfā(n).

When relatives, orphans, and the poor are present at the division (of inheritance), give them something from it (as needed) and speak to them kind words.

9

walyakhsyal-lażīna lau tarakū min khalfihim żurriyyatan ḍi‘āfan khāfū ‘alaihim, falyattaqullāha walyaqūlū qaulan sadīdā(n).

Let those who fear leaving behind weak offspring be cautious (about oppressing orphans). Let them fear Allah and speak righteous words.

10

Those who unjustly consume the property of orphans only consume fire into their bellies. They will enter a blazing fire.

11

yūṣīkumullāhu fī aulādikum liż-żakari miṡlu ḥaẓẓil-unṡayain(i), fa in kunna nisā'an fauqaṡnataini fa lahunna ṡuluṡā mā tarak(a), wa in kānat wāḥidatan fa lahan-niṣf(u), wa li abawaihi likulli wāḥidim minhumas-sudusu mimmā taraka in kāna lahū walad(un), fa illam yakul lahū waladuw wa wariṡahū abawāhu fa li'ummihiṡ-ṡuluṡ(u), fa in kāna lahū ikhwatun fa li'ummihis-sudusu mim ba‘di waṣiyyatiy yūṣī bihā au dain(in), ābā'ukum wa abnā'ukum, lā tadrūna ayyuhum aqrabu lakum naf‘ā(n), farīḍatam minallāh(i), innallāha kāna ‘alīman ḥakīmā(n).

Allah instructs you concerning (the inheritance of) your children: the share of a male is equal to that of two females. If there are only females, more than two, they receive two-thirds of what is left. If there is only one (female), she gets half. For the parents, each gets one-sixth of what is left if the deceased has children. If the deceased has no children and the parents inherit, the mother gets one-third. If the deceased has siblings, the mother gets one-sixth. (This is) after any bequest made or debt paid. You do not know which of your parents or children is more beneficial to you. This is an ordinance from Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

12

wa lakum niṣfu mā taraka azwājukum illam yakul lahunna walad(un), fa in kāna lahunna waladun fa lakumur-rubu‘u mimmā tarakna mim ba‘di waṣiyyatiy yūṣīna bihā au dain(in), wa lahunnar-rubu‘u mimmā taraktum illam yakul lakum walad(un), fa in kāna lakum waladun fa lahunnaṡ-ṡumunu mimmā taraktum mim ba‘di waṣiyyatiy tūṣūna bihā au dain(in), wa in kāna rajuluy yūraṡu kalālatan awimra'atuw wa lahū akhun au ukhtun fa likulli wāḥidatim minhumas-sudus(u), fa in kānū akṡara min żālika fa hum syurakā'u fiṡ-ṡuluṡi mim ba‘di waṣiyyatiy yūṣā bihā au dain(in), gaira muḍārr(in), waṣiyyatam minallāh(i), wallāhu ‘alīmun ḥalīm(un).

Your (husbands') share is half of what your wives leave if they have no children. If they have children, you get one-fourth of what they leave after any bequest they make or debt paid. The wives get one-fourth of what you leave if you have no children. If you have children, they get one-eighth of what you leave after any bequest you make or debt paid. If a man or woman leaves neither parents nor children but has a brother or sister (from the same mother), each gets one-sixth. If there are more than one (such siblings), they share one-third after any bequest or debt, without causing harm (to the heirs). This is a decree from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

13

tilka ḥudūdullāh(i), wa may yuṭi‘illāha wa rasūlahū yudkhilhu jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā, wa żālikal-fauzul-‘aẓīm(u).

These are the limits (set by) Allah. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein eternally. That is the great triumph.

14

Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits, Allah will admit them to a fire, abiding therein eternally, and they will have a humiliating punishment.

15

wal-lātī ya'tīnal-fāḥisyata min nisā'ikum fastasyhidū ‘alaihinna arba‘atam minkum, fa in syahidū fa amsikūhunna fil-buyūti ḥattā yatawaffāhunnal-mautu au yaj‘alallāhu lahunna sabīlā(n).

As for those women among you who commit immorality, have four witnesses from among you testify against them. If they testify, confine them (the women) to their homes until death takes them or Allah ordains another way for them.

16

wal-lażāni ya'tiyānihā minkum fa āżūhumā, fa in tābā wa aṣlaḥā fa a‘riḍū ‘anhumā, innallāha kāna tawwābar raḥīmā(n).

As for two among you who commit immorality, punish them both. If they repent and reform, leave them alone. Indeed, Allah is Ever- Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.

17

innamat-taubatu ‘alallāhi lil-lażīna ya‘malūnas-sū'a bijahālatin ṡumma yatūbūna min qarībin fa ulā'ika yatūbullāhu ‘alaihim, wa kānallāhu ‘alīman ḥakīmā(n).

Repentance with Allah is only for those who do evil in ignorance and then repent soon after. Allah accepts their repentance. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

18

wa laisatit-taubatu lil-lażīna ya‘malūnas-sayyi'āt(i), ḥattā iżā ḥaḍara aḥadahumul-mautu qāla innī tubtul-āna wa lal-lażīna yamūtūna wa hum kuffār(un), ulā'ika a‘tadnā lahum ‘ażāban alīmā(n).

Repentance is not accepted from those who persist in evil deeds until death approaches one of them, and then they say, 'I repent now,' nor from those who die as disbelievers. For them, We have prepared a painful punishment.

19

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū lā yaḥillu lakum an tariṡun-nisā'a karhā(n), wa lā ta‘ḍulūhunna litażhabū biba‘ḍi mā ātaitumūhunna illā ay ya'tīna bifāḥisyatim mubayyinah(tin), wa ‘āsyirūhunna bil-ma‘rūf(i), fa in karihtumūhunna fa ‘asā an takrahū syai'aw wa yaj‘alallāhu fīhi khairan kaṡīrā(n).

O you who believe! It is not lawful for you to inherit women by force, nor to oppress them to take back part of what you have given them, unless they commit clear immorality. Live with them honorably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which Allah has placed much good.

20

wa in arattumustibdāla zaujim makāna zauj(in), wa ātaitum iḥdāhunna qinṭāran falā ta'khużū minhu syai'ā(n), ata'khużūnahū buhtānaw wa iṡmam mubīnā(n).

If you wish to replace one wife with another and have given one of them a large amount of wealth, do not take back any of it. Would you take it back through false accusation and clear sin?

21

wa kaifa ta'khużūnahū wa qad afḍā ba‘ḍukum ilā ba‘ḍiw wa akhażna minkum mīṡāqan galīẓā(n).

How can you take it back when you have been intimate with one another, and they (your wives) have taken a solemn covenant from you?

22

wa lā tankiḥū mā nakaḥa ābā'ukum minan-nisā'i illā mā qad salaf(a), innahū kāna fāḥisyataw wa maqtā(n), wa sā'a sabīlā(n).

Do not marry women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed. Indeed, that is an indecent and hateful act, a terrible way.

23

Ḥurrimat ‘alaikum ummahātukum wa banātukum wa akhawātukum wa ‘ammātukum wa khālātukum wa banātul-akhi wa banātul-ukhti wa ummahātukumul-lātī arḍa‘nakum wa akhawātukum minar-raḍā‘ati wa ummahātu nisā'ikum wa rabā'ibukumul-lātī fī ḥujūrikum min nisā'ikumul-lātī dakhaltum bihinn(a), fa illam takūnū dakhaltum bihinna falā junāḥa ‘alaikum, wa ḥalā'ilu abnā'ikumul-lażīna min aṣlābikum, wa an tajma‘ū bainal-ukhtaini illā mā qad salaf(a), innallāha kāna gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

Forbidden to you (for marriage) are your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal aunts, maternal aunts, brothers’ daughters, sisters’ daughters, mothers who nursed you, sisters through nursing, your wives’ mothers, your stepdaughters under your care from wives with whom you have consummated marriage—but if you have not consummated the marriage, there is no sin in marrying them—wives of your biological sons, and marrying two sisters simultaneously, except what has already passed. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

And (forbidden are) chaste, believing women except those you rightfully possess (through marriage). This is Allah’s decree for you. Beyond these, it is lawful for you to marry chaste women, not committing fornication or taking secret lovers, by giving them their dowry. If you agree on the dowry, there is no sin in what you mutually agree upon afterward. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Whoever among you cannot afford to marry free, believing women, then (marry) believing female slaves you possess. Allah knows your faith. You are from one another (descendants of Adam and Eve). Marry them with their owners’ permission and give them their dowry fairly, as they are chaste, not fornicators, nor taking secret lovers. If they commit immorality after marriage, their punishment is half that of free women. This (permission to marry slaves) is for those who fear hardship (from avoiding sin). But patience is better for you. Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

yurīdullāhu liyubayyina lakum wa yahdiyakum sunanal-lażīna min qablikum wa yatūba ‘alaikum, wallāhu ‘alīmun ḥakīm(un).

Allah intends to clarify (His laws) for you, guide you to the ways of those before you (prophets and righteous people), and accept your repentance. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

27

wallāhu yurīdu ay yatūba ‘alaikum, wa yurīdul-lażīna yattabi‘ūnasy-syahawāti an tamīlū mailan ‘aẓīmā(n).

Allah intends to accept your repentance, but those who follow their desires want you to stray far (from the truth).

28

yurīdullāhu ay yukhaffifa ‘ankum, wa khuliqal-insānu ḍa‘īfā(n).

Allah intends to lighten your burden, for mankind was created weak.

29

O you who believe! Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, except through trade by mutual consent. Do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is Most Merciful to you.

30

wa may yaf‘al żālika ‘udwānaw wa ẓulman fa saufa nuṣlīhi nārā(n), wa kāna żālika ‘alallāhi yasīrā(n).

Whoever does this transgressively and unjustly, We will cast him into a fire. That is easy for Allah.

31

If you avoid the major sins forbidden to you, We will erase your minor sins and admit you to a noble place (Paradise).

Do not envy the favors Allah has bestowed on some of you over others. Men have a share of what they earn, and women have a share of what they earn. Ask Allah for some of His bounty. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of everything.

33

For each (man and woman), We have appointed heirs to what parents and relatives leave. Give those with whom you have made a covenant their share. Indeed, Allah is a Witness to everything.

Men are protectors of women because Allah has favored some of them over others and because they spend of their wealth. Righteous women are obedient and guard (their chastity) in their husbands’ absence, as Allah has guarded them. As for women you fear will be rebellious, admonish them, separate from them in bed, and (if necessary) strike them. But if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted, Great.

If you fear a breach between them (husband and wife), appoint an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family. If they both wish to reconcile, Allah will grant them success. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him. Be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, near and distant neighbors, companions, travelers, and slaves you possess. Indeed, Allah does not love those who are arrogant and boastful.

37

Those who are stingy, enjoin stinginess on others, and hide the bounty Allah has given them—We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.

38

And (also) those who spend their wealth to show off and be praised by people, and do not believe in Allah and the Last Day. Whoever takes Satan as a companion, what a terrible companion he is.

39

wa māżā ‘alaihim lau āmanū billāhi wal-yaumil-ākhiri wa anfaqū mimmā razaqahumullāh(u), wa kānallāhu bihim ‘alīmā(n).

What harm would it do them if they believed in Allah and the Last Day and spent from what Allah has provided them? Allah is All-Knowing of their state.

40

innallāha lā yaẓlimu miṡqāla żarrah(tin), wa in taku ḥasanatay yuḍā‘ifhā wa yu'ti mil ladunhu ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

Indeed, Allah does not wrong anyone, even by the weight of an atom. If there is a good deed (as small as an atom), He multiplies it and grants a great reward from Himself.

41

fa kaifa iżā ji'nā min kulli ummatim bisyahīdiw wa ji'nā bika ‘alā hā'ulā'i syahīdā(n).

How will it be (for the disbelievers) when We bring a witness (prophet) from every nation and bring you (Muhammad) as a witness over them?

42

yauma'iżiy yawaddul-lażīna kafarū wa ‘aṣawur-rasūla lau tusawwā bihimul-arḍ(u), wa lā yaktumūnallāha ḥadīṡā(n).

On that Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger (Muhammad) will wish they were leveled with the ground, but they cannot hide any event from Allah.

43

O you who believe! Do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you know what you are saying, nor in a state of major impurity—except when merely passing through—until you have bathed. If you are ill, on a journey, have relieved yourselves, or touched women and find no water, perform tayammum with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands. Indeed, Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.

44

alam tara ilal-lażīna ūtū naṣībam minal-kitābi yasytarūnaḍ-ḍalālata wa yurīdūna an taḍillus-sabīl(a).

Have you not seen those given a portion of the Book? They purchase misguidance and wish you to stray from the right path.

45

Allah knows your enemies best. Allah is sufficient as a Protector, and Allah is sufficient as a Helper.

Among the Jews are those who distort words from their places, saying, 'We hear but we do not obey,' and 'Hear, as if you hear nothing,' and 'Rā‘inā,' twisting their tongues and slandering the religion. If they had said, 'We hear and obey, and listen, and look at us,' it would have been better and more upright for them. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief; they believe only a little.

47

O you who were given the Book! Believe in what We have revealed (the Qur’an), confirming what you have, before We alter faces, turning them backward, or curse them as We cursed those who violated the Sabbath. Allah’s command is always fulfilled.

48

innallāha lā yagfiru ay yusyraka bihī wa yagfiru mā dūna żālika limay yasyā'(u), wa may yusyrik billāhi fa qadiftarā iṡman ‘aẓīmā(n).

Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah has committed a great sin.

49

alam tara ilal-lażīna yuzakkūna anfusahum, balillāhu yuzakkī may yasyā'u wa lā yuẓlamūna fatīlā(n).

Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves (Jews and Christians)? Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills, and they will not be wronged even by a thread.

50

unẓur kaifa yaftarūna ‘alallāhil-każib(a), wa kafā bihī iṡmam mubīnā(n).

See how they invent lies against Allah! That alone is a clear sin.

Have you not seen those given a portion of the Book (Torah)? They believe in Jibt and Taghut and say to the disbelievers (polytheists of Mecca) that they are more rightly guided than the believers.

52

ulā'ikal-lażīna la‘anahumullāh(u), wa may yal‘anillāhu falan tajida lahū naṣīrā(n).

They are the ones Allah has cursed. Whoever Allah curses, you will find no helper for them.

53

am lahum naṣībum minal-mulki fa iżal lā yu'tūnan-nāsa naqīrā(n).

Or do they have a share in the kingdom (authority)? Even then, they would not give people even the speck on a date seed.

54

am yaḥsudūnan-nāsa ‘alā mā ātāhumullāhu min faḍlih(ī), faqad ātainā āla ibrāhīmal-kitāba wal-ḥikmata wa ātaināhum mulkan ‘aẓīmā(n).

Or are they envious of people (Muhammad) for the bounty Allah has given them? We gave the family of Abraham the Book and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom.

55

fa minhum man āmana bihī wa minhum man ṣadda ‘anh(u), wa kafā bijahannama sa‘īrā(n).

Among them (those envious) are some who believed in him and some who prevented (others from believing) in him. Hellfire, with its blazing flames, is sufficient for them.

56

innal-lażīna kafarū bi'āyātinā sanuṣlīhim nārā(n), kullamā naḍijat julūduhum baddalnāhum julūdan gairahā liyażūqul-‘ażāb(a), innallāha kāna ‘azīzan ḥakīmā(n).

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our signs, We will cast them into a fire. Every time their skins are burned, We will replace them with new skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is Mighty, All-Wise.

57

wal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti sanudkhiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadā(n), lahum fīhā azwājum muṭahharah(tun), wa nudkhiluhum ẓillan ẓalīlā(n).

As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. They will have pure spouses there, and We will admit them to shaded, comfortable places.

58

innallāha ya'murukum an tu'addul-amānāti ilā ahlihā, wa iżā ḥakamtum bainan-nāsi an taḥkumū bil-‘adl(i), innallāha ni‘immā ya‘iẓukum bih(ī), innallāha kāna samī‘am baṣīrā(n).

Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to their owners and, when judging between people, to judge with justice. Indeed, Allah gives you the best instruction. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

59

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū aṭī‘ullāha wa aṭī‘ur-rasūla wa ulil-amri minkum, fa in tanāza‘tum fī syai'in fa ruddhu ilallāhi war-rasūli in kuntum tu'minūna billāhi wal-yaumil-ākhir(i), żālika khairuw wa aḥsanu ta'wīlā(n).

O you who believe! Obey Allah, obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those in authority among you. If you differ on anything, refer it to Allah (the Qur’an) and the Messenger (his Sunnah), if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for the outcome.

60

alam tara ilal-lażīna yaz‘umūna annahum āmanū bimā unzila ilaika wa mā unzila min qablika yurīdūna ay yataḥākamū ilaṭ-ṭāgūti wa qad umirū ay yakfurū bih(ī), wa yurīdusy-syaiṭānu ay yuḍillahum ḍalālam ba‘īdā(n).

Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what was revealed to you and what was revealed before you? Yet they wish to refer judgment to Taghut, though they were commanded to reject it. Satan intends to lead them far astray.

61

wa iżā qīla lahum ta‘ālau ilā mā anzalallāhu wa ilar-rasūli ra'aital-munāfiqīna yaṣuddūna ‘anka ṣudūdā(n).

When they are told, 'Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,' you see the hypocrites turn away from you vehemently.

62

fa kaifa iżā aṣābathum muṣībatum bimā qaddamat aidīhim ṡumma jā'ūka yaḥlifūna billāh(i), in aradnā illā iḥsānaw wa taufīqā(n).

How will it be when a calamity strikes them (the hypocrites) because of what their hands have done, and they come to you (Muhammad), swearing, 'By Allah, we intended only good and reconciliation'?

63

ulā'ikal-lażīna ya‘lamullāhu mā fī qulūbihim fa a‘riḍ ‘anhum wa ‘iẓhum wa qul lahum fī anfusihim qaulam balīgā(n).

They are the ones whose hearts Allah knows. So turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them words that touch their souls.

64

wa mā arsalnā mir rasūlin illā liyuṭā‘a bi'iżnillāh(i), wa lau annahum iẓ ẓalamū anfusahum jā'ūka fastagfarullāha wastagfara lahumur-rasūlu lawajadullāha tawwābar raḥīmā(n).

We sent no messenger except to be obeyed by Allah’s permission. If they, after wronging themselves, had come to you (Muhammad) and sought Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had sought forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.

65

falā wa rabbika lā yu'minūna ḥattā yuḥakkimūka fīmā syajara bainahum ṡumma lā yajidū fī anfusihim ḥarajam mimmā qaḍaita wa yusallimū taslīmā(n).

By your Lord, they do not truly believe until they make you (Muhammad) the judge in their disputes, finding no objection in their hearts to your decisions and submitting fully.

66

wa lau annā katabnā ‘alaihim aniqtulū anfusakum awikhrujū min diyārikum mā fa‘alūhu illā qalīlum minhum, wa lau annahum fa‘alū mā yū‘aẓūna bihī lakāna khairal lahum wa asyadda taṡbītā(n).

Even if We had commanded them, 'Kill yourselves or leave your homes,' they would not have done it, except for a few. If they had done what they were exhorted to do, it would have been better for them and would have strengthened their faith.

67

And then We would have given them a great reward from Us.

68

wa lahadaināhum ṣirāṭam mustaqīmā(n).

And We would have guided them to a straight path.

69

wa may yuṭi‘illāha war-rasūla fa ulā'ika ma‘al-lażīna an‘amallāhu ‘alaihim minan-nabiyyīna waṣ-ṣiddīqīna wasy-syuhadā'i waṣ-ṣāliḥīn(a), wa ḥasuna ulā'ika rafīqā(n).

Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad) will be with those whom Allah has blessed: the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. What excellent companions they are.

70

Żālikal-faḍlu minallāh(i), wa kafā billāhi ‘alīmā(n).

That is a bounty from Allah, and Allah is sufficient as All-Knowing.

71

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū khużū ḥiżrakum fanfirū ṡubātin awinfirū jamī‘ā(n).

O you who believe! Be prepared and advance (to battle) in groups or all together.

72

wa inna minkum lamal layubaṭṭi'ann(a), fa in aṣābatkum muṣībatun qāla qad an‘amallāhu ‘alayya iż lam akum ma‘ahum syahīdā(n).

Indeed, among you are those who linger (in battle). If a calamity strikes you, they say, 'Allah has favored me by not being with them in battle.'

73

wa la'in aṣābakum faḍlum minallāhi layaqūlanna ka'allam takum bainakum wa bainahū mawaddattuy yā laitanī kuntu ma‘ahum fa afūza fauzan ‘aẓīmā(n).

But if you receive a bounty (victory) from Allah, they say, as if there had been no affection between you and them, 'If only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great victory.'

74

falyuqātil fī sabīlillāhil-lażīna yasytarūnal-ḥayātad-dun-yā bil-ākhirah(ti), wa may yuqātil fī sabīlillāhi fa yuqtal au yaglib fa saufa nu'tīhi ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

Let those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the way of Allah. Whoever fights in the way of Allah and is killed or achieves victory, We will grant them a great reward.

75

wa mā lakum lā tuqātilūna fī sabīlillāhi wal-mustaḍ‘afīna minar-rijāli wan-nisā'i wal-wildānil-lażīna yaqūlūna rabbanā akhrijnā min hāżihil-qaryatiẓ-ẓālimi ahluhā, waj‘al lanā mil ladunka waliyyā(n), waj‘al lanā mil ladunka naṣīrā(n).

Why do you not fight in the way of Allah and for the oppressed—men, women, and children—who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city (Mecca) whose people are oppressors. Grant us a protector from You and a helper from You'?

76

al-lażīna āmanū yuqātilūna fī sabīlillāh(i), wal-lażīna kafarū yuqātilūna fī sabīliṭ-ṭāgūti fa qātilū auliyā'asy-syaiṭān(i), inna kaidasy-syaiṭāni kāna ḍa‘īfā(n).

The believers fight in the way of Allah, while the disbelievers fight in the way of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan; indeed, Satan’s schemes are weak.

77

alam tara ilal-lażīna qīla lahum kuffū aidiyakum wa aqīmuṣ-ṣalāta wa ātuz-zakāt(a), fa lammā kutiba ‘alaihimul-qitālu iżā farīqum minhum yakhsyaunan-nāsa kakhasy-yatillāhi au asyadda khasy-yah(tan), wa qālū rabbanā lima katabta ‘alainal-qitāl(a), lau lā akhkhartanā ilā ajalin qarīb(in), qul matā‘ud-dun-yā qalīl(un), wal-ākhiratu khairul limanittaqā, wa lā tuẓlamūna fatīlā(n).

Have you not seen those who were told, 'Restrain your hands (from fighting), establish prayer, and give zakat'? When fighting was ordained for them, some of them (the hypocrites) feared people as they fear Allah, or even more, saying, 'Our Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? Why not delay it for a short time?' Say, 'The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah (by joining the fight). You will not be wronged even a bit.'

78

aina mā takūnū yudrikkumul-mautu wa lau kuntum fī burūjim musyayyadah(tin), wa in tuṣibhum ḥasanatuy yaqūlū hāżihī min ‘indillāh(i), wa in tuṣibhum sayyi'atuy yaqūlū hāżihī min ‘indik(a), qul kullum min ‘indillāh(i), famā lihā'ulā'il-qaumi lā yakādūna yafqahūna ḥadīṡā(n).

Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you are in lofty, fortified towers. If good comes to them, they say, 'This is from Allah,' but if evil befalls them, they say, 'This is from you (Muhammad).' Say, 'All is from Allah.' Why do these people (hypocrites) hardly understand any speech?

79

mā aṣābaka min ḥasanatin fa minallāh(i), wa mā aṣābaka min sayyi'atin fa min nafsik(a), wa arsalnāka lin-nāsi rasūlā(n), wa kafā billāhi syahīdā(n).

Whatever good comes to you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. We have sent you (Muhammad) as a Messenger to mankind. Allah is sufficient as a Witness.

80

may yuṭi‘ir-rasūla faqad aṭā‘allāh(a), wa man tawallā famā arsalnāka ‘alaihim ḥafīẓā(n).

Whoever obeys the Messenger (Muhammad) has obeyed Allah. Whoever turns away, know that We have not sent you (Muhammad) as their keeper.

81

wa yaqūlūna ṭā‘ah(tun), fa iżā barazū min ‘indika bayyata ṭā'ifatum minhum gairal-lażī taqūl(u), wallāhu yaktubu mā yubayyitūn(a), fa a‘riḍ ‘anhum wa tawakkal ‘alallāh(i), wa kafā billāhi wakīlā(n).

They (the hypocrites) say, 'We obey,' but when they leave you (Muhammad), some of them plot at night something other than what they said. Allah records their plotting at night, so turn away from them and rely on Allah. Allah is sufficient as a Protector.

82

afalā yatadabbarūnal-qur'ān(a), wa lau kāna min ‘indi gairillāhi lawajadū fīhikhtilāfan kaṡīrā(n).

Do they not reflect on the Qur’an? If it were not from Allah, they would find many contradictions in it.

83

When news of security or fear reaches them, they spread it. If they had referred it to the Messenger and those in authority among them, those who can deduce the truth would have known it. Were it not for Allah’s grace and mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few.

84

faqātil fī sabīlillāh(i), lā tukallafu illā nafsaka wa ḥarriḍil-mu'minīn(a), ‘asallāhu ay yakuffa ba'sal lażīna kafarū, wallāhu asyaddu ba'saw wa asyaddu tankīlā(n).

So fight (Muhammad) in the way of Allah; you are not responsible except for yourself. Urge the believers (to fight). Perhaps Allah will restrain the might of the disbelievers. Allah is mightier in strength and severer in punishment.

85

may yasyfa‘ syafā‘atan ḥasanatay yakul lahū naṣībum minhā, wa may yasyfa‘ syafā‘atan sayyi'atay yakul lahū kiflum minhā, wa kānallāhu ‘alā kulli syai'im muqītā(n).

Whoever intercedes with a good intercession will have a share of its reward, and whoever intercedes with an evil intercession will bear a share of its sin. Allah has power over everything.

86

wa iżā ḥuyyītum bitaḥiyyatin fa ḥayyū bi'aḥsana minhā au ruddūhā, innallāha kāna ‘alā kulli syai'in ḥasībā(n).

When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with a better one or return it equally. Indeed, Allah keeps account of everything.

87

allāhu lā ilāha illā huw(a), layajma‘annakum ilā yaumil-qiyāmati lā raiba fīh(i), wa man aṣdaqu minallāhi ḥadīṡā(n).

Allah—there is no deity except Him. He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Who is more truthful in speech than Allah?

88

famā lakum fil-munāfiqīna fi'ataini wallāhu arkasahum bimā kasabū, aturīdūna an tahdū man aḍallallāh(u), wa may yuḍlilillāhu falan tajida lahū sabīlā(n).

Why do you divide into two factions regarding the hypocrites, when Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) because of their deeds? Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has let go astray? For those Allah has let go astray, you will find no way (to guide them).

89

They wish you would disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so you would be equal. Do not take any of them as allies until they emigrate in the way of Allah. If they turn away, seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take none of them as a close friend or helper.

90

Except those who seek refuge with a people with whom you have a treaty, or those who come to you with hearts reluctant to fight you or their own people. If Allah had willed, He would have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. If they leave you alone, do not fight you, and offer you peace, Allah has not given you a way (to fight) them.

91

You will find others who wish to be safe with you and safe with their own people. Whenever they are called back to mischief (polytheism), they plunge into it. If they do not leave you alone, offer you peace, or restrain their hands (from fighting you), seize them and kill them wherever you find them. Against them, We have given you clear authority (to fight, capture, and kill).

92

wa mā kāna limu'minin ay yaqtula mu'minan illā khaṭa'ā(n), wa man qatala mu'minan khaṭa'an fa taḥrīru raqabatim mu'minatiw wa diyatum musallamatun ilā ahlihī illā ay yaṣṣaddaqū, fa in kāna min qaumim bainakum wa bainahum mīṡāqun fa diyatum musallamatun ilā ahlihī wa taḥrīru raqabatim mu'minah(tin), famal lam yajid fa ṣiyāmu syahraini mutatābi‘aini taubatam minallāh(i), wa kānallāhu ‘alīman ḥakīmā(n).

It is not fitting for a believer to kill another believer except by mistake. Whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing slave and pay compensation to the deceased’s family, unless they waive it. If the deceased was from a people hostile to you but was a believer, (the killer) must free a believing slave. If the deceased was from a people with whom you have a treaty, (the killer) must pay compensation to the family and free a believing slave. Whoever cannot afford it must fast for two consecutive months as repentance to Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

93

wa may yaqtul mu'minam muta‘ammidan fa jazā'uhū jahannamu khālidan fīhā wa gaḍiballāhu ‘alaihi wa la‘anahū wa a‘adda lahū ‘ażāban ‘aẓīmā(n).

Whoever kills a believer intentionally, their recompense is Hell, abiding therein eternally. Allah is angry with them, curses them, and has prepared a great punishment for them.

94

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū iżā ḍarabtum fī sabīlillāhi fa tabayyanū wa lā taqūlū liman alqā ilaikumus-salāma lasta mu'minā(n), tabtagūna ‘araḍal-ḥayātid-dun-yā, fa ‘indallāhi magānimu kaṡīrah(tun), każālika kuntum min qablu fa mannallāhu ‘alaikum fa tabayyanū, innallāha kāna bimā ta‘malūna khabīrā(n).

O you who believe! When you go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, investigate carefully and do not say to someone who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the gains of worldly life, for with Allah are abundant gains. You were once like that, and Allah bestowed His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

95

lā yastawil-qā‘idūna minal-mu'minīna gairu uliḍ-ḍarari wal-mujāhidūna fī sabīlillāhi bi'amwālihim wa anfusihim, faḍḍalallāhul-mujāhidīna bi amwālihim wa anfusihim ‘alal-qā‘idīna darajah(tan), wa kullaw wa‘adallāhul-ḥusnā, wa faḍḍalallāhul-mujāhidīna ‘alal-qā‘idīna ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

Not equal are the believers who sit (without fighting) without a valid excuse and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah has favored those who strive with their wealth and lives over those who sit by a degree. To each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but He has favored those who strive over those who sit with a great reward.

96

darajātim minhu wa magfirataw wa raḥmah(tan), wa kānallāhu gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

(Namely) degrees from Him, forgiveness, and mercy. Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

97

Indeed, those whose souls are taken by the angels while they wrong themselves, they (the angels) ask, 'What was your state?' They reply, 'We were oppressed in the land (Mecca).' They (the angels) say, 'Was not Allah’s earth spacious enough for you to emigrate?' Their abode is Hell, a terrible destination.

98

illal-mustaḍ‘afīna minar-rijāli wan-nisā'i wal-wildāni lā yastaṭī‘ūna ḥīlataw wa lā yahtadūna sabīlā(n).

Except for the oppressed among men, women, and children who have no means and no guidance to a way (to emigrate).

99

Those, perhaps Allah will pardon them. Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.

100

Whoever emigrates in the way of Allah will find in the earth many places of refuge and abundance. Whoever leaves their home intending to emigrate for Allah and His Messenger but is overtaken by death, their reward is assured with Allah. Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

101

wa iżā ḍarabtum fil-arḍi fa laisa ‘alaikum junāḥun an taqṣurū minaṣ-ṣalāh(ti), in khiftum ay yaftinakumul-lażīna kafarū, innal-kāfirīna kānū lakum ‘aduwwam mubīnā(n).

When you travel through the earth, there is no sin in shortening the prayer if you fear attack by disbelievers. Indeed, the disbelievers are your clear enemy.

102

When you (Muhammad) are among them (your companions) and lead them in prayer, let a group stand (in prayer) with you, carrying their weapons. When they prostrate (completing one rak’ah), let them move behind you (to face the enemy), and let the other group that has not prayed come and pray with you, remaining vigilant and carrying their weapons. The disbelievers wish you to be negligent of your weapons and belongings so they can attack you all at once. There is no harm in laying down your weapons if you are troubled by rain or illness, but remain vigilant. Indeed, Allah has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

103

When you have completed your prayer, remember Allah while standing, sitting, or lying down. When you are secure, perform the prayer (as usual). Indeed, prayer is a timed obligation for the believers.

104

Do not weaken in pursuing them (your enemy). If you suffer pain, know that they suffer pain as you do, but you hope from Allah what they do not hope. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

105

innā anzalnā ilaikal-kitāba bil-ḥaqqi litaḥkuma bainan-nāsi bimā arākallāh(u), wa lā takun lil-khā'inīna khaṣīmā(n).

Indeed, We have revealed the Book (the Qur’an) to you (Muhammad) with truth to judge between people with what Allah has taught you. Do not be an advocate for the treacherous.

106

wastagfirillāh(a), innallāha kāna gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

Seek forgiveness from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

107

wa lā tujādil ‘anil-lażīna yakhtānūna anfusahum, innallāha lā yuḥibbu man kāna khawwānan aṡīmā(n).

Do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. Indeed, Allah does not love those who are treacherous and sinful.

108

They may hide from people, but they cannot hide from Allah, for He is with them when they devise plans at night that He does not approve. Allah encompasses what they do.

hā'antum hā'ulā'i jādaltum ‘anhum fil-ḥayātid-dun-yā, famay yujādilullāha ‘anhum yaumal-qiyāmati am may yakūnu ‘alaihim wakīlā(n).

That is you! You argue for them in this worldly life, but who will argue against Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be their protector (against Allah’s punishment)?

110

wa may ya‘mal sū'an au yaẓlim nafsahū ṡumma yastagfirillāha yajidillāha gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

Whoever does evil or wrongs themselves but then seeks Allah’s forgiveness will find Allah Forgiving, Most Merciful.

111

wa may yaksib iṡman fa innamā yaksibuhū ‘alā nafsih(ī),wa kānallāhu ‘alīman ḥakīmā(n).

Whoever commits a sin, indeed, commits it against themselves. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

112

wa may yaksib khaṭī'atan au iṡman ṡumma yarmi bihī barī'an fa qadiḥtamala buhtānaw wa iṡmam mubīnā(n).

Whoever commits a mistake or sin and then accuses an innocent person has borne a slander and a clear sin.

113

wa lau lā faḍlullāhi ‘alaika wa raḥmatuhū lahammaṭ-ṭā'ifatum minhum ay yuḍillūk(a), wa mā yuḍillūna illā anfusahum wa mā yaḍurrūnaka min syai'(in), wa anzalallāhu ‘alaikal-kitāba wal-ḥikmata wa ‘allamaka mā lam takun ta‘lam(u), wa kāna faḍlullāhi ‘alaika ‘aẓīmā(n).

Were it not for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, a group of them would have intended to mislead you. But they only mislead themselves, and they cannot harm you at all. Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and taught you what you did not know. Allah’s favor upon you is great.

114

lā khaira fī kaṡīrim min najwāhum illā man amara biṣadaqatin au ma‘rūfin au iṣlāḥim bainan-nās(i), wa may yaf‘al żālikabtigā'a marḍātillāhi fa saufa nu'tīhi ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

There is no good in most of their secret meetings, except for those who enjoin charity, righteousness, or reconciliation among people. Whoever does this seeking Allah’s pleasure, We will grant them a great reward.

115

wa may yusyāqiqir-rasūla mim ba‘di mā tabayyana lahul-hudā wa yattabi‘ gaira sabīlil-mu'minīna nuwallihī mā tawallā wa nuṣlihī jahannam(a), wa sā'at maṣīrā(n).

Whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has been made clear to them and follows a path other than that of the believers, We will leave them in their chosen path and cast them into Hell—a terrible destination.

116

innallāha lā yagfiru ay yusyraka bihī wa yagfiru mā dūna żālika limay yasyā'(u), wa may yusyrik billāhi faqad ḍalla ḍalālam ba‘īdā(n).

Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah has gone far astray.

117

iy yad‘ūna min dūnihī illā ināṡā(n), wa iy yad‘ūna illā syaiṭānam marīdā(n).

They call upon, instead of Him, female deities. They call upon nothing but a rebellious Satan.

118

Allah cursed him, and he said, 'I will take a portion of Your servants.'

119

wa la'uḍillannahum wa la'umanniyannahum wa la'āmurannahum fa layubattikunna āżānal-an‘āmi wa la'āmurannahum fa layugayyirunna khalqallāh(i), wa may yattakhiżisy-syaiṭāna waliyyam min dūnillāhi faqad khasira khusrānam mubīnā(n).

'I will mislead them, arouse false hopes in them, and order them to slit the ears of livestock, and I will order them to alter Allah’s creation.' Whoever takes Satan as a protector instead of Allah has suffered a clear loss.

120

He (Satan) makes promises to them and arouses false hopes in them, but Satan only promises them deception.

121

ulā'ika ma'wāhum jahannam(u), wa lā yajidūna ‘anhā maḥīṣā(n).

Their (those deceived) abode is Hell, and they will find no escape from it.

122

wal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti sanudkhiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadā(n), wa‘dallāhi ḥaqqā(n), wa man aṣdaqu minallāhi qīlā(n).

Those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. Allah’s promise is true. Who is more truthful in speech than Allah?

123

laisa bi'amāniyyikum wa lā amāniyyi ahlil-kitāb(i), may ya‘mal sū'ay yujza bih(ī), wa lā yajid lahū min dūnillāhi waliyyaw wa lā naṣīrā(n).

(Reward from Allah) is not based on your wishful thinking nor the wishful thinking of the People of the Book. Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it and will find no protector or helper besides Allah.

124

Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer, they will enter Paradise and will not be wronged even a bit.

125

wa man aḥsanu dīnam mimman aslama wajhahū lillāhi wa huwa muḥsinuw wattaba‘a millata ibrāhīma ḥanīfā(n), wattakhażallāhu ibrāhīma khalīlā(n).

Who has a better religion than one who submits fully to Allah, does good, and follows the faith of Abraham, the upright? Allah took Abraham as a friend.

126

wa lillāhi mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa kānallāhu bikulli syai'im muḥīṭā(n).

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah encompasses everything.

127

They ask you for a ruling about women. Say, 'Allah gives you a ruling about them, and what is recited to you in the Qur’an concerning orphan women to whom you do not give what is prescribed for them, yet you desire to marry them, and concerning the weak children. (Allah commands you) to deal justly with orphans. Whatever good you do, Allah is All-Knowing of it.'

128

wa inimra'atun khāfat mim ba‘lihā nusyūzan au i‘rāḍan falā junāḥa ‘alaihimā ay yuṣliḥā bainahumā ṣulḥā(n), waṣ-ṣulḥu khair(un), wa uḥḍiratil-anfususy-syuḥḥ(a), wa in tuḥsinū wa tattaqū fa innallāha kāna bimā ta‘malūna khabīrā(n).

If a woman fears rebellion or indifference from her husband, there is no sin for them to make peace with each other, and peace is better (for them) though people are naturally stingy. If you improve (your relations with your wife) and guard yourselves (from rebellion and indifference), indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

129

wa lan tastaṭī‘ū an ta‘dilū bainan-nisā'i wa lau ḥaraṣtum falā tamīlū kullal-maili fa tażarūhā kal-mu‘allaqah(ti), wa in tuṣliḥū wa tattaqū fa innallāha kāna gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

You will not be able to be just among your wives, even if you strive to do so. So do not incline excessively (toward one you love), leaving another hanging. If you make amends and guard yourselves (from wrongdoing), indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

130

wa iy yatafarraqā yugnillāhu kullam min sa‘atih(ī), wa kānallāhu wāsi‘an ḥakīmā(n).

If they separate, Allah will enrich each from His abundance. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Wise.

131

wa lillāhi mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa laqad waṣṣainal-lażīna ūtul-kitāba min qablikum wa iyyākum anittaqullāh(a), wa in takfurū fa inna lillāhi mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa kānallāhu ganiyyan ḥamīdā(n).

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. We enjoined those given the Book before you and you to fear Allah. If you disbelieve, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Allah is Free of need, Praiseworthy.

132

wa lillāhi mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa kafā billāhi wakīlā(n).

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Allah is sufficient as a Protector.

133

If Allah wills, He can remove you all, O mankind, and bring others (in your place). Allah is capable of doing so.

134

man kāna yurīdu ṡawābad-dun-yā fa ‘indallāhi ṡawābud-dun-yā wal-ākhirah(ti), wa kānallāhu samī‘am baṣīrā(n).

Whoever desires the reward of this world, know that with Allah are the rewards of this world and the Hereafter. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

135

O you who believe! Be upholders of justice, witnesses for Allah, even against yourselves, your parents, or your relatives. Whether rich or poor, Allah knows best their welfare. Do not follow desires to deviate from justice. If you distort (words) or refuse to testify, know that Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

136

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū āminū billāhi wa rasūlihī wal-kitābil-lażī nazzala ‘alā rasūlihī wal-kitābil-lażī anzala min qabl(u), wa may yakfur billāhi wa malā'ikatihī wa kutubihī wa rusulihī wal-yaumil-ākhiri faqad ḍalla ḍalālam ba‘īdā(n).

O you who believe! Maintain your faith in Allah, His Messenger (Muhammad), the Book (the Qur’an) revealed to His Messenger, and the books revealed before. Whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has gone far astray.

137

innal-lażīna āmanū ṡumma kafarū ṡumma āmanū ṡumma kafarū ṡummazdādū kufral lam yakunillāhu liyagfira lahum wa lā liyahdiyahum sabīlā(n).

Indeed, those who believed then disbelieved, then believed again, then disbelieved and increased in disbelief—Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to a straight path.

138

basysyiril-munāfiqīna bi'anna lahum ‘ażāban alīmā(n).

Give tidings to the hypocrites that they will have a painful punishment.

139

al-lażīna yattakhiżūnal-kāfirīna auliyā'a min dūnil-mu'minīn(a), ayabtagūna ‘indahumul-‘izzata fa innal-‘izzata lillāhi jamī‘ā(n).

Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of believers—do they seek honor with them? Indeed, all honor belongs to Allah.

140

He has revealed to you in the Book (the Qur’an) that if you hear Allah’s verses being denied or mocked (by disbelievers), do not sit with them until they turn to another topic. Otherwise, you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell.

141

Those who wait for what befalls you—if you receive victory from Allah, they say, 'Were we not with you?' If the disbelievers gain a share, they say, 'Did we not help you win and protect you from the believers?' Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection. Allah will not grant the disbelievers a way to overcome the believers.

142

innal-munāfiqīna yukhādi‘ūnallāha wa huwa khādi‘uhum, wa iżā qāmū ilaṣ-ṣalāti qāmū kusālā, yurā'ūnan-nāsa wa lā yażkurūnallāha illā qalīlā(n).

Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He who deceives them. When they stand for prayer, they do so lazily, intending to show off to people. They remember Allah only a little.

143

mużabżabīna baina żālik(a), lā ilā ha'ulā'i wa lā ilā ha'ulā'(i), wa may yuḍlilillāhu falan tajida lahū sabīlā(n).

They waver between (faith and disbelief), belonging neither to these nor to those. Whoever Allah lets go astray, you will find no way for them.

144

yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū lā tattakhiżul-kāfirīna auliyā'a min dūnil-mu'minīn(a), aturīdūna an taj‘alū lillāhi ‘alaikum sulṭānam mubīnā(n).

O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as allies instead of believers. Would you give Allah clear proof against you?

145

innal-munāfiqīna fid-darkil-asfali minan-nār(i), wa lan tajida lahum naṣīrā(n).

Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire, and you will find no helper for them.

146

illal-lażīna tābū wa aṣlaḥū wa‘taṣamū billāhi wa akhlaṣū dīnahum lillāhi fa ulā'ika ma‘al-mu'minīn(a), wa saufa yu'tillāhul mu'minīna ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

Except those who repent, reform, hold fast to (the religion of) Allah, and practice their religion sincerely for Allah. They will be with the believers, and Allah will grant the believers a great reward.

147

mā yaf‘alullāhu bi‘ażābikum in syakartum wa āmantum, wa kānallāhu syākiran ‘alīmā(n).

Allah will not punish you if you are grateful and believe. Allah is Appreciative, All-Knowing.

148

lā yuḥibbullāhul-jahra bis-sū'i minal-qauli illā man ẓulim(a), wa kānallāhu samī‘an ‘alīmā(n).

Allah does not like evil words spoken openly, except by one who has been wronged. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

149

in tubdū khairan au tukhfūhu au ta‘fū ‘an sū'in fa innallāha kāna ‘afuwwan qadīrā(n).

If you disclose a good deed, conceal it, or forgive an offense, indeed, Allah is Pardoning, All-Powerful.

150

innal-lażīna yakfurūna billāhi wa rusulihī wa yurīdūna ay yufarriqū bainallāhi wa rusulihī wa yaqūlūna nu'minu biba‘ḍin wa nakfuru biba‘ḍ(in), wa yurīdūna ay yattakhiżū baina żālika sabīlā(n).

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to differentiate between (belief in) Allah and His messengers, saying, 'We believe in some and disbelieve in others,' seeking to take a middle path,

151

ulā'ika humul-kāfirūna ḥaqqā(n), wa a‘tadnā lil-kāfirīna ‘ażābam muhīnā(n).

They are the true disbelievers. We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.

152

wal-lażīna āmanū billāhi wa rusulihī wa lam yufarriqū baina aḥadim minhum ulā'ika saufa nu'tīhim ujūrahum, wa kānallāhu gafūrar raḥīmā(n).

As for those who believe in Allah and His messengers without differentiating between them, Allah will grant them their rewards. Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

153

yas'aluka ahlul-kitābi an tunazzila ‘alaihim kitābam minas-samā'i faqad sa'alū mūsā akbara min żālika fa qālū arinallāha jahratan fa akhażathumuṣ-ṣā‘iqatu bi ẓulmihim, ṡummattakhażul-‘ijla mim ba‘di mā jā'athumul-bayyinātu fa ‘afaunā ‘an żālik(a), wa ātainā mūsā sulṭānam mubīnā(n).

The People of the Book ask you (Muhammad) to bring down a book from heaven to them. They asked Moses for something greater, saying, 'Show us Allah plainly.' So lightning struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they worshipped the calf after clear proofs came to them, yet We pardoned them and gave Moses clear authority.

154

wa rafa‘nā fauqahumuṭ ṭūra bimīṡāqihim wa qulnā lahumudkhulul-bāba sujjadaw wa qulnā lahum lā ta‘dū fis-sabti wa akhażnā minhum mīṡāqan galīẓā(n).

We raised the mountain (Sinai) above them to strengthen their covenant, and We commanded them, 'Enter the gate (of Jerusalem) prostrating,' and, 'Do not violate the Sabbath.' We took from them a firm covenant.

155

fabimā naqḍihim mīṡāqahum wa kufrihim bi'āyātillāhi wa qatlihimul-ambiyā'a bigairi ḥaqqiw wa qaulihim qulūbunā gulf(un), bal ṭaba‘allāhu ‘alaihā bikufrihim falā yu'minūna illā qalīlā(n).

So (We punished them) for breaking their covenant, disbelieving in Allah’s signs, killing the prophets without right, and saying, 'Our hearts are sealed.' Rather, Allah sealed their hearts due to their disbelief, so only a few of them believe.

156

wa bikufrihim wa qaulihim ‘alā maryama buhtānan ‘aẓīmā(n).

And (We punished them) for their disbelief (in Jesus) and their grave slander against Mary.

157

wa qaulihim innā qatalnal-masīḥa ‘īsabna maryama rasūlallāh(i), wa mā qatalūhu wa mā ṣalabūhu wa lākin syubbiha lahum, wa innal-lażīnakhtalafū fīhi lafī syakkim minh(u), mā lahum bihī min ‘ilmin illattibā‘aẓ-ẓanni wa mā qatalūhu yaqīnā(n).

And (We punished them) for saying, 'We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah,' when they neither killed him nor crucified him, but it was made to appear so to them. Those who differ about (his killing) are in doubt about it. They have no certain knowledge, only following conjecture, and they did not kill him for certain.

158

bar rafa‘ahullāhu ilaih(i), wa kānallāhu ‘azīzan ḥakīmā(n).

Rather, Allah raised Jesus to Himself. Allah is Mighty, All-Wise.

159

wa im min ahlil-kitābi illā layu'minanna bihī qabla mautih(ī), wa yaumal-qiyāmati yakūnu ‘alaihim syahīdā(n).

There is none among the People of the Book who will not believe in him (Jesus) before his death. On the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.

160

fa biẓulmim minal-lażīna hādū ḥarramnā ‘alaihim ṭayyibātin uḥillat lahum wa biṣaddihim ‘an sabīlillāhi kaṡīrā(n).

Due to the wrongdoing of the Jews, We forbade them good foods that were lawful for them before, and because they often hindered (others) from Allah’s path.

161

wa akhżihimur-ribā wa qad nuhū ‘anhu wa aklihim amwālan-nāsi bil-bāṭil(i), wa a‘tadnā lil-kāfirīna minhum ‘ażāban alīmā(n).

And because they practiced usury, though they were forbidden from it, and consumed people’s wealth unjustly. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

162

lākinir-rāsikhūna fil-‘ilmi minhum wal-mu'minūna yu'minūna bimā unzila ilaika wa mā unzila min qablika wal-muqīmīnaṣ-ṣalāta wal-mu'tūnaz-zakāta wal-mu'minūna billāhi wal-yaumil-ākhir(i), ulā'ika sanu'tīhim ajran ‘aẓīmā(n).

But those among them with deep knowledge and the believers believe in what was revealed to you (Muhammad) and what was revealed before you, as well as those who establish prayer, give zakat, and believe in Allah and the Last Day. To them, We will grant a great reward.

163

Indeed, We revealed to you (Muhammad) as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him, and We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. We gave David the Psalms.

164

wa rusulan qad qaṣaṣnāhum ‘alaika wa rusulal lam naqṣuṣhum ‘alaik(a), wa kallamallāhu mūsā taklīmā(n).

Some messengers We have told you about before, and some We have not told you about. To Moses, Allah spoke directly.

165

rusulam mubasysyirīna wa munżirīna li'allā yakūna lin-nāsi ‘alallāhi ḥujjatum ba‘dar-rusul(i), wa kānallāhu ‘azīzan ḥakīmā(n).

Messengers as bearers of glad tidings and warners, so that people would have no argument against Allah after the messengers. Allah is Mighty, All-Wise.

166

lākinillāhu yasyhadu bimā anzala ilaika anzalahū bi‘ilmih(ī), wal-malā'ikatu yasyhadūn(a), wa kafā billāhi syahīdā(n).

But Allah bears witness to what He revealed to you (Muhammad). He revealed it with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness. Allah is sufficient as a Witness.

167

innal-lażīna kafarū wa ṣaddū ‘an sabīlillāhi qad ḍallū ḍalālam ba‘īdā(n).

Indeed, those who disbelieve and hinder (others) from Allah’s path have gone far astray.

168

innal-lażīna kafarū wa ẓalamū lam yakunillāhu liyagfira lahum wa lā liyahdiyahum ṭarīqā(n).

Indeed, those who disbelieve and do wrong, Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to a straight path.

169

illā ṭarīqa jahannama khālidīna fīhā abadā(n), wa kāna żālika ‘alallāhi yasīrā(n).

Except the path to Hell, abiding therein forever. That is easy for Allah.

170

yā ayyuhan-nāsu qad jā'akumur-rasūlu bil-ḥaqqi mir rabbikum fa āminū khairal lakum, wa in takfurū fa inna lillāhi mā fis-samāwāti wal-arḍ(i), wa kānallāhu ‘alīman ḥakīmā(n).

O mankind! The Messenger (Muhammad) has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe in him; it is better for you. If you disbelieve, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

171

yā ahlal-kitābi lā taglū fī dīnikum wa lā taqūlū ‘alallāhi illal-ḥaqq(a), innamal-masīḥu ‘īsabnu maryama rasūlullāhi wa kalimatuh(ū), alqāhā ilā maryama wa rūḥum minh(u), fa āminū billāhi wa rusulih(ī), wa lā taqūlū ṡalāṡah(tun), inntahū khairal lakum innamallāhu ilāhuw wāḥid(un), subḥānahū ay yakūna lahū walad(un), lahū mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ(i), wa kafā billāhi wakīlā(n).

O People of the Book! Do not exceed the bounds in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is Allah’s Messenger and His word conveyed to Mary and a spirit from Him. Believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, '(God is) three.' Cease (such talk); it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is the One God, exalted above having a child. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Allah is sufficient as a Protector.

172

lay yastankifal-masīḥu ay yakūna ‘abdal lillāhi wa lal-malā'ikatul-muqarrabūn(a), wa may yastankif ‘an ‘ibādatihī wa yastakbir fa sayaḥsyuruhum ilaihi jamī‘ā(n).

The Messiah never disdained to be a servant of Allah, nor did the angels nearest (to Allah). Whoever disdains to worship Him and is arrogant, Allah will gather them all to Himself.

173

fa ammal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti fa yuwaffīhim ujūrahum wa yazīduhum min faḍlih(ī), wa ammal-lażīnastankafū wastakbarū fa yu‘ażżibuhum ‘ażāban alīmā(n), wa lā yajidūna lahum min dūnillāhi waliyyaw wa lā naṣīrā(n).

As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, Allah will perfect their reward and add to them from His bounty. But those who disdain (worshipping Allah) and are arrogant, He will punish with a painful punishment. They will find no protector or helper besides Allah.

174

As for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to (His religion), He will admit them to mercy and bounty from Him (Paradise) and guide them to a straight path to Himself.

They ask you for a ruling about kalalah. Say, 'Allah gives you a ruling about kalalah: If a person dies without children but has a sister, she gets half of what is left. The brother inherits all her estate if she has no children. If there are two sisters, they get two-thirds of what is left. If the heirs are brothers and sisters, the male’s share equals that of two females. Allah clarifies (this law) for you so you do not go astray. Allah is All-Knowing of everything.'
