Q.S Al-Kahf (اَلْكَهْف) - 110 Number of Verses

(The Cave)

Qari

Murottal Audio

1

al-ḥamdu lillāhil-lażī anzala ‘alā ‘abdihil-kitāba wa lam yaj‘al lahū ‘iwajā(n).

All praise is for Allah, who revealed the Book to His servant and did not make it crooked,

2

qayyimal liyunżira ba'san syadīdam mil ladunhu wa yubasysyiral-mu'minīnal-lażīna ya‘malūnaṣ-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran ḥasanā(n).

a straight guidance to warn of a severe punishment from Him and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward,

3

mākiṡīna fīhi abadā(n).

in which they will abide forever.

4

wa yunżiral-lażīna qāluttakhażallāhu waladā(n).

And to warn those who say, 'Allah has taken a son.'

5

mā lahum bihī min ‘ilmiw wa lā li'ābā'ihim, kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwāhihim, iy yaqūlūna illā każibā(n).

They have no knowledge of it, nor did their forefathers. How grave is the word that comes from their mouths; they speak nothing but a lie.

6

fa la‘allaka bākhi‘un nafsaka ‘alā āṡārihim illam yu'minū bihāżal-ḥadīṡi asafā(n).

Perhaps you (Muhammad) would grieve yourself to death over their denial if they do not believe in this message.

7

innā ja‘alnā mā ‘alal-arḍi zīnatal lahā linabluwahum ayyuhum aḥsanu ‘amalā(n).

Indeed, We have made what is on earth an adornment for it to test which of them is best in deed.

8

wa innā lajā‘ilūna mā ‘alaihā ṣa‘īdan juruzā(n).

And indeed, We will make what is on earth a barren ground.

9

am ḥasibta anna aṣḥābal-kahfi war-raqīmi kānū min āyātinā ‘ajabā(n).

Or do you think the companions of the cave and the inscription were a wonder among Our signs?

10

iż awal-fityatu ilal-kahfi fa qālū rabbanā ātinā mil ladunka raḥmataw wa hayyi' lanā min amrinā rasyadā(n).

When the youths sought refuge in the cave, they said, 'Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and provide us with true guidance in our affair.'

11

faḍarabnā ‘alā āżānihim fil-kahfi sinīna ‘adadā(n).

So We sealed their ears in the cave for several years.

12

Ṡumma ba‘aṡnāhum lina‘lama ayyul-ḥizbaini aḥṣā limā labiṡū amadā(n).

Then We awakened them to know which of the two groups could best calculate the time they had stayed.

13

naḥnu naquṣṣu ‘alaika naba'ahum bil-ḥaqq(i), innahum fityatun āmanū birabbihim wa zidnāhum hudā(n).

We narrate to you (Muhammad) their story in truth. They were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased their guidance.

14

wa rabaṭnā ‘alā qulūbihim iż qāmū fa qālū rabbunā rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍi lan nad‘uwa min dūnihī ilāhal laqad qulnā iżan syaṭaṭā(n).

We strengthened their hearts when they stood and said, 'Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth; we will not call upon any god besides Him, for then we would have uttered an outrageous falsehood.'

15

hā'ulā'i qaumunattakhażū min dūnihī ālihah(tan), lau lā ya'tūna ‘alaihim bisulṭānim bayyin(in), faman aẓlamu mimmaniftarā ‘alallāhi każibā(n).

'These people of ours have taken gods besides Him. Why do they not bring clear proof for them? Who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against Allah?'

16

'When you have withdrawn from them and what they worship besides Allah, seek refuge in the cave. Your Lord will extend His mercy to you and prepare for you a way out of your affair.'

17

wa tarasy-syamsa iżā ṭala‘at tazāwaru ‘an kahfihim żātal-yamīni wa iżā garabat taqriḍuhum żātasy-syimāli wa hum fī fajwatim minh(u), żālika min āyātillāh(i), may yahdillāhu fa huwal-muhtadi wa may yuḍlil falan tajida lahū waliyyam mursyidā(n).

You would see the sun, when it rose, inclining away from their cave to the right, and when it set, passing them to the left, while they were in an open space within it. That was among the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides is rightly guided, and whoever He leads astray, you will find no protector to guide him.

18

wa taḥsabuhum aiqāẓaw wa hum ruqūd(un), wa nuqallibuhum żātal-yamīni wa żātasy-syimāl(i), wa kalbuhum bāsiṭun żirā‘aihi bil-waṣīd(i), lawiṭṭala‘ta ‘alaihim lawallaita minhum firāraw wa lamuli'ta minhum ru‘bā(n).

You would think them awake, though they were asleep. We turned them to the right and left, while their dog stretched its forelegs at the entrance. Had you seen them, you would have turned and fled, filled with fear.

19

wa każālika ba‘aṡnāhum liyatasā'alū bainahum, qāla qā'ilum minhum kam labiṡtum, qālū labiṡnā yauman au ba‘ḍa yaum(in), qālū rabbukum a‘lamu bimā labiṡtum, fab‘aṡū aḥadakum biwariqikum hāżihī ilal-madīnati falyanẓur ayyuhā azkā ṭa‘āman falya'tikum birizqim minhu walyatalaṭṭaf wa lā yusy‘iranna bikum aḥadā(n).

Thus We awakened them so they could question one another. One said, 'How long have you stayed?' They replied, 'We stayed a day or part of a day.' Others said, 'Your Lord knows best how long you stayed. Send one of you with this silver coin to the city, let him find the best food, and bring some back. Let him be cautious and not reveal your presence to anyone.'

20

innahum iy yaẓharū ‘alaikum yarjumūkum au yu‘īdūkum fī millatihim wa lan tufliḥū iżan abadā(n).

'For if they discover you, they will stone you or force you back to their religion, and then you will never succeed.'

21

wa każālika a‘ṡarnā ‘alaihim liya‘lamū anna wa‘dallāhi ḥaqquw wa annas-sā‘ata lā raiba fīhā, iż yatanāza‘ūna bainahum amrahum fa qālubnū ‘alaihim bun-yānā(n), rabbuhum a‘lamu bihim, qālal-lażīna galabū ‘alā amrihim lanattakhiżanna ‘alaihim masjidā(n).

Thus We made them known to the people, so they would know that Allah’s promise is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour. When they disputed among themselves about their affair, some said, 'Build a structure over them; their Lord knows best about them.' Those who prevailed said, 'We will surely build a place of worship over them.'

22

sayaqūlūna ṡalāṡatur rābi‘uhum kalbuhum, wa yaqūlūna khamsatun sādisuhum kalbuhum rajmam bil-gaib(i), wa yaqūlūna sab‘atuw wa ṡāminuhum kalbuhum, qur rabbī a‘lamu bi‘iddatihim mā ya‘lamuhum illā qalīl(un), falā tumāri fīhim illā mirā'an ẓāhirā(n), wa lā tastafti fīhim minhum aḥadā(n).

Some will say, 'They were three, the fourth being their dog,' while others say, 'Five, the sixth being their dog,' guessing at the unseen. Others say, 'Seven, the eighth being their dog.' Say, 'My Lord knows best their number; few know them.' So do not argue about them except with clear reasoning, nor ask anyone about them.

23

wa lā taqūlanna lisyai'in innī fā‘ilun żālika gadā(n).

Never say about anything, 'I will surely do it tomorrow,'

24

illā ay yasyā'allāh(u), ważkur rabbaka iżā nasīta wa qul ‘asā ay yahdiyani rabbī li'aqraba min hāżā rasyadā(n).

without adding, 'If Allah wills.' Remember your Lord if you forget and say, 'Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer to the truth than this.'

25

wa labiṡū fī kahfihim ṡalāṡa mi'atin sinīna wazdādū tis‘ā(n).

They remained in their cave for three hundred years, plus nine.

26

qulillāhu a‘lamu bimā labiṡū, lahū gaibus-samāwāti wal-arḍ(i), abṣir bihī wa asmi‘, mā lahum min dūnihī miw waliyy(in), wa lā yusyriku fī ḥukmihī aḥadā(n).

Say, 'Allah knows best how long they stayed. To Him belongs the unseen of the heavens and earth. How perfect is His sight and hearing! They have no protector besides Him, and He shares His judgment with none.'

27

watlu mā ūḥiya ilaika min kitābi rabbik(a), lā mubaddila likalimātih(ī), wa lan tajida min dūnihī multaḥadā(n).

Recite what has been revealed to you of your Lord’s Book. None can change His words, and you will find no refuge besides Him.

28

waṣbir nafsaka ma‘al-lażīna yad‘ūna rabbahum bil-gadāti wal-‘asyiyyi yurīdūna wajhahū wa lā ta‘du ‘aināka ‘anhum, turīdu zīnatal-ḥayātid-dun-yā, wa lā tuṭi‘ man agfalnā qalbahū ‘an żikrinā wattaba‘a hawāhu wa kāna amruhū furuṭā(n).

Be patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. Do not turn your eyes away from them, desiring the adornments of worldly life, nor obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his desires and whose affair is in excess.

29

wa qulil-ḥaqqu mir rabbikum, faman syā'a falyu'miw wa man syā'a falyakfur, innā a‘tadnā liẓ-ẓālimīna nārā(n), aḥāṭa bihim surādiquhā, wa iy yastagīṡū yugāṡū bimā'in kal-muhli yasywil-wujūh(a), bi'sasy-syarāb(u), wa sā'at murtafaqā(n).

Say, 'The truth is from your Lord. Whoever wills, let him believe, and whoever wills, let him disbelieve.' We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire whose flames will surround them. If they ask for relief, they will be given water like molten metal that scalds their faces. What a terrible drink and a wretched resting place!

30

innal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti innā lā nuḍī‘u ajra man aḥsana ‘amalā(n).

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.

31

ulā'ika lahum jannātu ‘adnin tajrī min taḥtihimul-anhāru yuḥallauna fīhā min asāwira min żahabiw wa yalbasūna ṡiyāban khuḍram min sundusiw wa istabraqim muttaki'īna fīhā ‘alal-arā'ik(i), ni‘maṡ-ṡawāb(u), wa ḥasunat murtafaqā(n).

They will have Gardens of Eden with rivers flowing beneath. They will be adorned with golden bracelets and wear green garments of fine and thick silk, reclining on beautiful couches. What an excellent reward and a beautiful resting place!

32

waḍrib lahum maṡalar rajulaini ja‘alnā li'aḥadihimā jannataini min a‘nābiw wa ḥafafnāhumā binakhliw wa ja‘alnā bainahumā zar‘ā(n).

Present to them the parable of two men: one (a disbeliever) We granted two vineyards, surrounded by date palms with a field between them.

33

kiltal-jannataini ātat ukulahā wa lam taẓlim minhu syai'ā(n), wa fajjarnā khilālahumā naharā(n).

Both gardens yielded their produce without fail, and We caused a stream to flow between them.

34

wa kāna lahū ṡamar(un), fa qāla liṣāḥibihī wa huwa yuḥāwiruhū ana akṡaru minka mālaw wa a‘azzu nafarā(n).

He had great wealth and said to his companion (a believer) while conversing, 'I am greater than you in wealth and stronger in followers.'

35

wa dakhala jannatahū wa huwa ẓālimul linafsih(ī), qāla mā aẓunnu an tabīda hāżihī abadā(n).

He entered his garden, wronging himself with arrogance and disbelief, saying, 'I do not think this will ever perish,'

36

'nor do I think the Hour will come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find something better than this.'

37

qāla lahū ṣāḥibuhū wa huwa yuḥāwiruhū akafarta bil-lażī khalaqaka min turābin ṡumma min nuṭfatin ṡumma sawwāka rajulā(n).

His companion said to him while conversing, 'Do you disbelieve in the One who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then fashioned you into a man?'

38

lākinna huwallāhu rabbī wa lā usyriku birabbī aḥadā(n).

'But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I associate none with Him.'

wa lau lā iż dakhalta jannataka qulta mā syā'allāh(u), lā quwwata illā billāh(i), in tarani ana aqalla minka mālaw wa waladā(n).

'Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, “As Allah wills; there is no power except with Allah”? Though you see me with less wealth and children than you,'

40

fa ‘asā rabbī ay yu'tiyani khairam min jannatika wa yursila ‘alaihā ḥusbānam minas-samā'i fa tuṣbiḥa ṣa‘īdan zalaqā(n).

'my Lord may grant me better than your garden and send upon yours a thunderbolt from the sky, making it barren,'

41

au yuṣbiḥa mā'uhā gauran falan tastaṭī‘a lahū ṭalabā(n).

'or its water may sink into the earth, and you will never find it again.'

42

wa uḥīṭa biṡamarihī fa aṣbaḥa yuqallibu kaffaihi ‘alā mā anfaqa fīhā wa hiya khāwiyatun ‘alā ‘urūsyihā wa yaqūlu yā laitanī lam usyrik birabbī aḥadā(n).

His wealth was destroyed, and he wrung his hands in regret for what he had spent on it, as the vines collapsed on their trellises. He said, 'If only I had not associated anything with my Lord!'

43

wa lam takul lahū fi'atuy yanṣurūnahū min dūnillāhi wa mā kāna muntaṣirā(n).

He had no group to help him besides Allah, nor could he defend himself.

44

hunālikal-walāyatu lillāhil-ḥaqq(i), huwa khairun ṡawābaw wa khairun ‘uqbā(n).

There, protection belongs only to Allah, the True. He is best in reward and best in outcome.

45

waḍrib lahum maṡalal-ḥayātid-dun-yā kamā'in anzalnāhu minas-samā'i fakhtalaṭa bihī nabātul-arḍi fa aṣbaḥa hasyīman tażrūhur-riyāḥ(u), wa kānallāhu ‘alā kulli syai'im muqtadirā(n).

Present to them the example of the life of this world: it is like rain We send from the sky, which the earth’s plants absorb, but soon they become dry stubble scattered by the wind. Allah has power over all things.

46

al-mālu wal-banūna zīnatul-ḥayātid-dun-yā, wal-bāqiyātuṣ-ṣāliḥātu khairun ‘inda rabbika ṡawābaw wa khairun amalā(n).

Wealth and children are the adornments of this worldly life, but righteous deeds that endure are better with your Lord for reward and better for hope.

47

wa yauma nusayyirul-jibāla wa taral-arḍa bārizah(tan), wa ḥasyarnāhum falam nugādir minhum aḥadā(n).

On the Day We make the mountains move and you see the earth laid bare, We will gather them, leaving none behind.

48

wa ‘uriḍū ‘alā rabbika ṣaffā(n), laqad ji'tumūnā kamā khalaqnākum awwala marratim bal za‘amtum allan naj‘ala lakum mau‘idā(n).

They will be presented before your Lord in rows: 'You have come to Us as We created you the first time. Yet you claimed We would never appoint this meeting for you!'

49

wa wuḍi‘al-kitābu fa taral-mujrimīna musyfiqīna mimmā fīhi wa yaqūlūna yā wailatanā mā lihāżal-kitābi lā yugādiru ṣagīrataw wa lā kabīratan illā aḥṣāhā, wa wajadū mā ‘amilū ḥaḍirā(n), wa lā yaẓlimu rabbuka aḥadā(n).

The book (of deeds) will be placed, and you will see the sinners fearful of what is in it, saying, 'Woe to us! What is this book that omits nothing, small or great, but has recorded it?' They will find all they did recorded, and your Lord wrongs no one.

50

wa iż qulnā lil-malā'ikatisjudū li'ādama fa sajadū illā iblīs(a), kāna minal-jinni fa fasaqa ‘an amri rabbih(ī), afa tattakhiżūnahū wa żurriyyatahū auliyā'a min dūnī wa hum lakum ‘aduww(un), bi'sa liẓ-ẓālimīna badalā(n).

When We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' they prostrated, except Iblis. He was of the jinn and defied his Lord’s command. Will you take him and his offspring as allies instead of Me, though they are your enemies? What a wretched exchange for the wrongdoers!

51

mā asyhattuhum khalqas-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa lā khalqa anfusihim, wa mā kuntu muttakhiżal-muḍillīna ‘aḍudā(n).

I did not make them witness the creation of the heavens and earth or their own creation, nor do I take those who mislead as helpers.

52

On the Day He says, 'Call upon My partners you claimed,' they will call them, but they will not answer. We will place a barrier of destruction between them.

53

wa ra'al-mujrimūnan nāra fa ẓannū annahum muwāqi‘ūhā wa lam yajidū ‘anhā maṣrifā(n).

The sinners will see the Fire and realize they will fall into it, finding no escape.

54

wa laqad ṣarrafnā fī hāżal-qur'āni lin-nāsi min kulli maṡal(in), wa kānal-insānu akṡara syai'in jadalā(n).

We have explained in this Qur’an every kind of parable for mankind, but man is the most argumentative of creatures.

55

Nothing prevents people from believing when guidance comes to them and seeking their Lord’s forgiveness, except that they await the fate of earlier nations or the punishment to come openly.

56

wa mā nursilul-mursalīna illā mubasysyirīna wa munżirīn(a), wa yujādilul-lażīna kafarū bil-bāṭili liyudḥiḍū bihil-ḥaqqa wattakhażū āyātī wa mā unżirū huzuwā(n).

We send messengers only as bearers of glad tidings and warners, but the disbelievers argue with falsehood to refute the truth and mock My signs and warnings.

57

wa man aẓlamu mimman żukkira bi'āyāti rabbihī fa a‘raḍa ‘anhā wa nasiya mā qaddamat yadāh(u), innā ja‘alnā ‘alā qulūbihim akinnatan ay yafqahūhu wa fī āżānihim waqrā(n), wa in tad‘uhum ilal-hudā falay yahtadū iżan abadā(n).

Who is more unjust than one who is reminded of his Lord’s signs but turns away and forgets what his hands have done? We have placed veils over their hearts, preventing understanding, and deafness in their ears. Even if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided.

58

wa rabbukal-gafūru żur-raḥmah(ti), lau yu'ākhiżuhum bimā kasabū la‘ajjala lahumul-‘ażāb(a), bal lahum mau‘idul lay yajidū min dūnihī mau'ilā(n).

Your Lord is Most Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to seize them for their deeds, He would hasten their punishment. But they have an appointed time from which they will find no escape.

59

wa tilkal-qurā ahlaknāhum lammā ẓalamū wa ja‘alnā limahlikihim mau‘idā(n).

Those cities—We destroyed them when they wronged, and We set an appointed time for their destruction.

60

wa iż qāla mūsā lifatāhu lā abraḥu ḥattā abluga majma‘al-baḥraini au amḍiya ḥuqubā(n).

When Moses said to his servant, 'I will not stop until I reach the junction of the two seas, even if it takes years.'

61

falammā balagā majma‘a bainihimā nasiyā ḥūtahumā fattakhaża sabīlahū fil-baḥri sarabā(n).

But when they reached the junction, they forgot their fish, which took its way into the sea, slipping away.

62

falammā jāwazā qāla lifatāhu ātinā gadā'anā laqad laqīnā min safarinā hāżā naṣabā(n).

When they had passed on, Moses said to his servant, 'Bring us our meal; we are weary from this journey.'

63

qāla ara'aita iż awainā ilaṣ-ṣakhrati fa innī nasītul-ḥūt(a), wa mā ansānīhu illasy-syaiṭanu an ażkurah(ū), wattakhaża sabīlahū fil-baḥri ‘ajabā(n).

He replied, 'Did you see? When we rested by the rock, I forgot the fish—Satan made me forget to mention it—and it took its way into the sea miraculously.'

64

qāla żālika mā kunnā nabg(i), fartaddā ‘alā āṡārihimā qaṣaṣā(n).

Moses said, 'That is what we were seeking.' So they retraced their steps.

65

fa wajadā ‘abdam min ‘ibādinā ātaināhu raḥmatam min ‘indinā wa ‘allamnāhu mil ladunnā ‘ilmā(n).

They found one of Our servants, whom We had granted mercy and taught knowledge from Our presence.

66

qāla lahū mūsā hal attabi‘uka ‘alā an tu‘allimani mimmā ‘ullimta rusydā(n).

Moses said to him, 'May I follow you so you may teach me some of the true knowledge you have been given?'

67

qāla innaka lan tastaṭī‘a ma‘iya ṣabrā(n).

He said, 'You will not be able to have patience with me.'

68

wa kaifa taṣbiru ‘alā mā lam tuḥiṭ bihī khubrā(n).

'How can you be patient with matters you do not fully understand?'

69

qāla satajidunī in syā'allāhu ṣābiraw wa lā a‘ṣī laka amrā(n).

Moses said, 'You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey your orders.'

70

qāla fa inittaba‘tanī falā tas'alnī ‘an syai'in ḥattā uḥdiṡa laka minhu żikrā(n).

He said, 'If you follow me, do not ask about anything until I mention it to you.'

71

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā rakibā fis-safīnati khara ahā, qāla akharaqtahā litugriqa ahlahā, laqad ji'ta syai'an imrā(n).

So they set out, until they were in a boat, and he damaged it. Moses said, 'Did you damage it to drown its people? You have done something grave!'

72

qāla alam aqul innaka lan tastaṭī‘a ma‘iya ṣabrā(n).

He said, 'Did I not say you would not be able to have patience with me?'

73

qāla lā tu'ākhiżnī bimā nasītu wa lā turhiqnī min amrī ‘usrā(n).

Moses said, 'Do not blame me for forgetting, and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair.'

74

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā laqiyā gulāman fa qatalah(ū), qāla aqatalta nafsan zakiyyatam bigairi nafs(in), laqad ji'ta syai'an nukrā(n).

They continued until they met a young man, and he killed him. Moses said, 'Have you killed an innocent soul who did not kill another? You have done something reprehensible!'

75

qāla alam aqul laka innaka lan tastaṭī‘a ma‘iya ṣabrā(n).

He said, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?'

76

qāla in sa'altuka ‘an syai'im ba‘dahā falā tuṣāḥibnī, qad balagta mil ladunnī ‘użrā(n).

Moses said, 'If I ask you about anything after this, do not let me accompany you. You have had enough excuses from me.'

77

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā atayā ahla qaryatinistaṭ‘amā ahlahā fa abau ay yuḍayyifūhumā fa wajadā fīhā jidāray yurīdu ay yaqaḍḍa fa aqāmah(ū), qāla lau syi'ta lattakhażta ‘alaihi ajrā(n).

They proceeded until they came to a town and asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. They found a wall about to collapse, and he repaired it. Moses said, 'If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.'

78

qāla hāżā firāqu bainī wa bainik(a), sa'unabbi'uka bita'wīli mā lam tastaṭī‘ ‘alaihi ṣabrā(n).

He said, 'This is the parting between you and me. I will explain the matters you could not bear patiently.'

79

ammas-safīnatu fa kānat limasākīna ya‘malūna fil-baḥri fa arattu an a‘ībahā, wa kāna warā'ahum malikuy ya'khużu kulla safīnatin gaṣbā(n).

'As for the boat, it belonged to poor people working at sea. I intended to damage it because a king ahead was seizing every boat by force.'

80

wa ammal-gulāmu fa kāna abawāhu mu'minaini fa khasyīnā ay yurhiqahumā ṭugyānaw wa kufrā(n).

'As for the young man, his parents were believers, and we feared he would lead them into transgression and disbelief.'

81

fa aradnā ay yubdilahumā rabbuhumā khairam minhu zakātaw wa aqraba ruḥmā(n).

'We hoped their Lord would grant them a better, purer, and more compassionate child in his place.'

wa ammal-jidāru fa kāna ligulāmaini yatīmaini fil-madīnati wa kāna taḥtahū kanzul lahumā wa kāna abūhumā ṣāliḥā(n), fa arāda rabbuka ay yablugā asyuddahumā wa yastakhrijā kanzahumā raḥmatam mir rabbik(a), wa mā fa‘altuhū ‘an amrī, żālika ta'wīlu mā lam tasṭī‘ ‘alaihi ṣabrā(n).

'As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city. Beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous. Your Lord willed that they reach maturity and retrieve their treasure as a mercy from Him. I did not act of my own accord. That is the explanation of what you could not bear patiently.'

83

wa yas'alūnaka ‘an żil qarnain(i), qul sa'atlū ‘alaikum minhu żikrā(n).

They ask you (Muhammad) about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, 'I will recite to you an account of him.'

84

innā makkannā lahū fil-arḍi wa ātaināhu min kulli syai'in sababā(n).

Indeed, We established him on earth and gave him the means to achieve everything.

85

fa atba‘a sababā(n).

So he followed a path.

86

Ḥattā iżā balaga magribasy-syamsi wajadahā tagrubu fī ‘ainin ḥami'atiw wa wajada ‘indahā qaumā(n), qulnā yā żal-qarnaini immā an tu‘ażżiba wa immā an tattakhiża fīhim ḥusnā(n).

Until he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a dark, muddy spring, and found a people there. We said, 'O Dhul-Qarnayn, you may punish them or treat them with kindness.'

87

qāla ammā man ẓalama fa saufa nu‘ażżibuhū ṡumma yuraddu ilā rabbihī fa yu‘ażżibuhū ‘ażāban nukrā(n).

He said, 'Whoever does wrong, we will punish him, then he will be returned to his Lord, who will punish him with a severe punishment.'

88

wa ammā man āmana wa ‘amila ṣāliḥan fa lahū jazā'anil-ḥusnā, wa sanaqūlu lahū min amrinā yusrā(n).

'But whoever believes and does righteous deeds will have the best reward, and we will assign him easy tasks.'

89

Ṡumma atba‘a sababā(n).

Then he followed another path.

90

Ḥattā iżā balaga maṭli‘asy-syamsi wajadahā taṭlu‘u ‘alā qaumil lam naj‘al lahum min dūnihā sitrā(n).

Until he reached the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no shelter from it.

91

każālik(a), wa qad aḥaṭnā bimā ladaihi khubrā(n).

So it was, and We encompassed all that he had in knowledge.

92

Ṡumma atba‘a sababā(n).

Then he followed another path.

93

Ḥattā iżā balaga bainas-saddaini wajada min dūnihimā qaumal lā yakādūna yafqahūna qaulā(n).

Until he reached a place between two mountains, he found a people who could barely understand speech.

94

qālū yā żal-qarnaini inna ya'jūja wa ma'jūja mufsidūna fil-arḍi fahal naj‘alu laka kharjan ‘alā an taj‘alā bainanā wa bainahum saddā(n).

They said, 'O Dhul-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are causing corruption in the land. May we pay you to build a barrier between us and them?'

95

qāla mā makkannī fīhi rabbī fa a‘īnūnī biquwwatin aj‘al bainakum wa bainahum radmā(n).

He said, 'What my Lord has granted me is better than your payment. Help me with labor, and I will build a barrier between you and them.'

96

Ātūnī zubaral-ḥadīd(i), ḥattā iżā sāwā bainaṣ-ṣadafaini qālanfukhū, ḥattā iżā ja‘alahū nārā(n), qāla ātūnī ufrig ‘alaihi qiṭrā(n).

'Bring me sheets of iron.' When he had leveled them between the two peaks, he said, 'Blow,' until it became red-hot. Then he said, 'Bring me molten copper to pour over it.'

97

famasṭā‘ū ay yaẓharūhu wa mastaṭā‘ū lahū naqbā(n).

Thus, they (Gog and Magog) could neither climb it nor pierce it.

98

qāla hāżā raḥmatum mir rabbī, fa iżā jā'a wa‘du rabbī ja‘alahū dakkā'(a), wa kāna wa‘du rabbī ḥaqqā(n).

He said, 'This is a mercy from my Lord. But when my Lord’s promise comes, He will level it. My Lord’s promise is true.'

99

wa taraknā ba‘ḍahum yauma'iżiy yamūju fī ba‘ḍiw wa nufikha fiṣ-ṣūri fa jama‘nāhum jam‘ā(n).

On that day, We will let them (Gog and Magog) surge against one another, and when the trumpet is blown, We will gather them all.

100

wa ‘araḍnā jahannama yauma'iżil lil-kāfirīna ‘arḍā(n).

On that day, We will present Hell clearly to the disbelievers,

101

allażīna kānat a‘yunuhum fī giṭā'in ‘an żikrī wa kānū lā yastaṭī‘ūna sam‘ā(n).

those whose eyes were veiled from My remembrance and who could not hear.

102

afaḥasibal-lażīna kafarū ay yattakhiżū ‘ibādī min dūnī auliyā'(a), innā a‘tadnā jahannama lil-kāfirīna nuzulā(n).

Do the disbelievers think they can take My servants as protectors besides Me? We have prepared Hell as a dwelling for the disbelievers.

103

qul hal nunabbi'ukum bil-akhsarīna a‘mālā(n).

Say, 'Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in deeds?'

104

al-lażīna ḍalla sa‘yuhum fil-ḥayātid-dun-yā wa hum yaḥsabūna annahum yuḥsinūna ṣun‘ā(n).

Those whose efforts in this worldly life are misguided, while they think they are doing good.

105

ulā'ikal-lażīna kafarū bi'āyāti rabbihim wa liqā'ihī fa ḥabiṭat a‘māluhum falā nuqīma lahum yaumal-qiyāmati waznā(n).

They are those who disbelieve in their Lord’s signs and the meeting with Him. Their deeds are worthless, and We will assign them no weight on the Day of Resurrection.

106

Żālika jazā'uhum jahannamu bimā kafarū wattakhażū āyātī wa rusulī huzuwā(n).

Their reward is Hell for their disbelief and for mocking My signs and messengers.

107

innal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum jannātul-firdausi nuzulā(n).

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds will have the Gardens of Paradise as their dwelling,

108

khālidīna fīhā lā yabgūna ‘anhā ḥiwalā(n).

abiding therein forever, with no desire to leave.

109

qul lau kānal-baḥru midādal likalimāti rabbī lanafidal-baḥru qabla an tanfada kalimāṭu rabbī wa lau ji'nā bimiṡlihī madadā(n).

Say, 'If the sea were ink for writing my Lord’s words, the sea would be exhausted before His words, even if We brought another like it.'

110

qul innamā ana basyarum miṡlukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhuw wāḥid(un), faman kāna yarjū liqā'a rabbihī falya‘mal ‘amalan ṣāliḥaw wa lā yusyrik bi‘ibādati rabbihī aḥadā(n).

Say, 'I am only a man like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is One God. Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and not associate anything in worship with his Lord.'
